i was chattin 2 oscarbravo earlier and he suggested the idea of us having a field shoot some day. he said that if we're interested he could get in touch with a field club near dublin somewhere and sort it for us..

i dont know what the general consensus is on this, but i think it'd be a laugh.

I went on a field shoot in October and it was great.
Its good to get away from shooting at one target at the same distance.

ooh ooh im on for that, went to one up north before christmas and had so much fun!! didnt even loose any arrows either!
Found it a little hard to judge the distances tho, but im sure u get used to it after a while!

Whats the difference witha field shoot, just out-doors. sounds like fun if yea two are so eager. Sure why not, it will be something differnent.

the 1 i was at was in a forest, you shoot up hill and down hill etc. there is no marked distance, each target is further or closer than the last and you have to guess how far away it is, you only get a few arrows at each which makes it even harder!
Its just completly different to target where you shoot the same distance over and over, its great for a change!!

UL were supposed to do one last year.

Neville mentioned it at one of the shoots but it didn't happen in the end, as far as I know.

Though on the Sunday after UL last year we did some outdoor shooting there. Scared the bejeeses outta some joggers who started to jog towards the targets. :p It was hilarious. They screamed and ran!

Be aware that field archery can be hard on arrows... trees and such can be unforgiving targets :)

Id really like to try a field shoot. since i started shooting last september ive only ever shot 18m. Maybe i should try outdoors at a fixed target distance first, but a field shoot definitly has my vote

Its not as bad as you say, Renegade_Archer, I went and didi not damage any arrows, the threee Cuthberts went and again no damage.

The key is to use your best arrows. This was they will fly straight a hopefully be in the target or in the ground below.
If you use crap bent arrows you will be lucky if you even reach the target.

If we're gonna move y'all outdoors, we may as well go the whole hog and do a 3D shoot. This means life-sized foam animal sculptures in a woodland setting, no marked distances, three arrows per target, uphills, downhills, shooting between trees... it's a blast.

It is hard on arrows tho. Where possible the target is arranged in front of a natural backstop, but even so arrows do go missing or get broken. Usually targets are up to 40m away (for big targets like grizzlies or standing deer), but can be as little as 10m (for rabbits and such).

IFAF shoots are usually on Sundays, and the calendar is pretty full. It would also be hassle trying to organise IFAF registration for everyone for a once-off shoot. How would some Saturday work for people, if one of the clubs could host it as a day out, rather than a competition?

Saturdays are our usual days for Inter-Varsity competition so that'd be a good idea.

Surely there should be some link up with IFAF and IAAA. Insurance would be the main issue. Maybe they should talk to each other, if they haven't already.

Seeing as this is a post that both of our mods are guaranteed to read, i'd like to take this opportunity to thank both paul and podge for eventually deciding to put up with our random nonsensical posts without goin ape.

    -cheers lads.

PS the field shoot seems very popular... maybe we can give it a go

It should come with a health warning for beginners though. Renegade_Archer, toxof, mhairesa and The Sin are used to shooting various distances outdoors and have many more sight settings memorised for these distances and thats probably why nobody lost an arrow. Its a different story for other people. Just a word of warning, its a great idea and should help keep people interested.

Btw, does it seem wierd to anyone else that Baggins and the moderators are getting on? Not that I'm complaining, just seems strange. Like watching Ireland win something in the rugby - I'm not complaining, just seems strange. :dunno:

Field archery is archery in an outdoor setting, usually woodland, with different targets at varying distances. The targets can be rounds, animal faces, or 3D foam animals. Where the targets are animals (paper or 3D) there is a "kill zone" marked on the target, which usually scores higher than a "wound" (anywhere on the animal outside the kill zone).

We sometimes do gratuitously fun stuff like clout shooting - shooting at a flag 140m away, and scoring by the distance the arrows land from the flag. It's quite a sight, watching dozens of arrows flying high into the air.

NICE! ive done that before. its madness, makes a change shooting at 6 foot bears and not getting arrested.........

If it was at all possible could it be arranged when we all finish exams. that way everyone could attend, as the closer it gets to exams the more reluctant people would be to going.

The 3D shoot sounds like fun and anything new and different is good, everyone seems to be agreed to it, so we should try to organise it. Obliged to help in anyway possible.

Clout shooting's class!! Did it once in Sportslink with the World Champion (guy from Northern Ireland if I'm not mistaken)... Mongolian recurve - sweeeet! :D

i don'y know about the rest of you but we (QS) have figured out that we funish out exams on the 25th of May, the rest of the college (DIT) are probably around the same, therefore the best time for a shoot would be early June. So as to let everyone attend......although it would be nice to take into account those who will be abroad. Everyone is keen to attend, to be fair to all we should agree on a date.

Hello there. Found this site whilst surfing. I'm the PRO for ITFAS (Irish traditional field archery society) We have clubs in Longford (Near enough to Dublin), Waterford and Cork. You dont have to join our club to be able to shoot with us. All you have to do is pay an insurance levy of 50c and hey presto you are covered under our insurance! HOWEVER you must shoot traditional equipment i.e wooden bows such as Longbow, flat bow, recurve or Mongolian minus twiddly bits, sights, release aids etc. You must also use wooden arrows with feather fletching. We do field shooting with 40 3d targets, clout shooting, poppinjay and wand splitting. Check out our web site www.itfas.com for contact details. The site is under construction and I'm crap at computers so excuse the appearance.

So one couldnt take a standard olympic bow and strip all the crap off it, it has to be a proper traditional bow?

I'd imagine that to be considered 'traditional' a bow would have to be made of wood - wouldn't that rule out most Olympic-style bows?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 743 ✭✭✭Renegade_Archer

Well that rules out "traditional" archery for the majority of IV shooters - were not going to go buy seperate bows - there has to be some sort of field shoot where one can use a bare olympic bow.

  • Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 28,830 Mod ✭✭✭✭oscarBravo

Most field shoots are categorised so that you can shoot whatever you have - with or without aids etc. I've yet to see anyone show up with a laser sight, but I'm sure it's gonna happen sooner or later!

The point about traditional bows applies only to ITFAS. Most fields shoots don't have such a restriction. That said, I've heard excellent things about ITFAS events.

Indeed. Bows must be wooden, arrows must be wooden, wooden legs are optional. Most trad archers have a number of bows and I assumed that most olympic archers would have a dusty old laminated recurve in their attic. I guess not. I suppose with trad bows being relatively cheap we can afford to have a few classes of bow. With trad clubs popping up all over the place and being bloody good crack its a shame. A decent flat or long bow and a dozen self assembly arrows shouldnt cost much more than €150.
Thgnk about it. Guests are alway welcome at our events as we are a drinking club with an archery problem!::p
