    Hey guys, so sick of my brother ripping cds onto the HD in wmv or wma format. Anyone know of a free plug in for windows media player 9. (xppro)
    Dont want to install a different program either cos people using this computer are very stubborn and will not use anything that they dont know!
    Can't wait to get my own machine!

    Basically, find the windows media player exe, and replace it with the EXE of your ripping app of choice (www.exactaudiocopy.org <-- best ripper, it has the best error correction out there, and all i can say is WMP has next to NO error correction!). Then when they start up WMP, they'll really just open up the new ripping program.

    Then you can laugh smugly.

    To be honest, EAC (Exact Audio Copy) is very easy to use. All you do is pop in the disc, and make sure it is set to Secure mode for ripping, and then just click the big MP3 button.

    If you want a hand getting it initially set up for the best rips, pm me.

    I dont know of any add-on that will make WMP encode in anything but WMA.

    Motion seconded. EAC is the biz, I use it all the time. And if you're connected to the internet it even auto-retrieves the tracklisting from the freedb. If you don't like EAC you can also try CD-EX

    Thanks guys, i think i've sorted that issue alright with your tips. Great idea about replacing the exe file mutant. I'm using a different ripper tho. X2cd and it seems to be working fine. I'll check out thatt EAC program myself later.

    Any cd ripping program "sounds" good at first listen, but put in a mildly scratched cd, and you'll soon see how badly they perform. Most ripping programs are optimised for speed, and so are fairly bad at dealing with scratchs. EAC is optimised for quality, and error correction (but still has the standard high speed option, with little error correction). Thats why it's my choice.

    EAC in secure mode is impossible to beat when ripping scratched cd's.

    what do ye guys think of CDex i using it to rip as it allows me acces to the local freedb that i have.. i find it handy but would like a second opinon..

    as above, but i will add this: EAC can access online FreeDB, and offline FreeDB (i.e. if you downloaded the package off freedb.org and unzipped it). It can also read the cdplayer.ini file, which windows uses to store it's own database of cd's you've played in it before.

    It's also got some good features like "error return codes". Read the FAQ for more info, i'm too lazy to explain it.

    Try this - Change some values in the Registry and it will rip in MP3 format:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Microsoft->MediaPlayer->Settings->MP3Encoding

    This is a quote from that cd freaks page and i've navigated in regedit to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Microsoft->MediaPlayer-> but there is no settings key.? Not to worry like but it would be a handy trick alrite.

    I did it successfully a few months ago, but when i reinstalled windows last week, and went to do it again, I got the same problem, some of the keyes were not there. I read on another site that you have to create it all yourself, but I couldn't get it to work. Any ideas Anyone?
