Cork Music School gets green light
The Government has announced the go-ahead for the building of the new Cork School of Music.

The Minister for Education and Science, Noel Dempsey, said there would be a capital cost of just under €60m for the project.

The new school will be the first fully purpose-built school of music in Ireland.

It will be built and operated by Jarvis Projects and plans to be up and running by summer 2006; Cork is the European Capital of Culture for 2005.

Planning permission for the state of the art building was granted in December 2002.

However, the project has remained stalled since then because of escalating costs and Government difficulties over funding the project.

Campaigners at the School, who had planned to run candidates in the local elections in June because of the delay, said they were delighted with the announcement.

Cultural activist at the School, Gerry Kelly, said he would no longer be running in the elections.

He described today's announcement as a giant step forward for the arts.

Making the announcement in Cork, Minister Dempsey said the Government was always committed to this important project.

However he said they were faced with real difficulties, both national and European, in clearing the project and these had now been fully resolved.
