Hi, I'm looking for help. I'm compiling a research thesis on urban youth culture in nui maynooth and i need to come up with an academically acceptable alternative for the word skanger (white tracksuits and baseball hat brigade) is an ugly word, so if anyone has any ideas, post them below.... Thanks...

There has always been a name for that style brigade, however obscure: sometimes called "shams" in the era of sham '69, called "caj's" (as in, first syllable of "casual") in the UK in the 70s.

But always known as "white trash" everywhere.

If you're struggling with terminology like "skanger" then I despair for your thesis - think, dammit!

nui maynooth it's called now? As in "ennui"?

    ;-)

I don't see how the word matters so long as you define what you mean and clearly demarcate what the sign 'skanger' describes.

However, you may want to look into the origin of the word 'skanger' as I'm sure it has a very specific origin and pedigree. You might like to formally assemble all the terms associated with that 'class', or social group, describe and explain how they differ then use the word that best fits the exact context of your study.

If you can't agree on one, invent one. Maybe something like 'Schkanacker' :D.

The scots call them neds...apparently stands for non educated deliquents or something. It roughly equates with skanger in scotland - but their assembly does use the word in speeches and stuff. Something which had some assembly memeber angry - she wanted its use baned.

So Id guess it might be a fairly acceptable term.
