here at work i've got a dell p4 2.25ghz with intel extreme graphics Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller. I know this is an on board graphics chip and not good for games at all at all but i was wondering what would be a comparitive graphics card in regards to its 3d performance?
Reason i ask is cause i downloaded Hidden and Dangerous Deluxe and just installed it here to make sure it downloaded ok before bringing it home. I tried playing it on 800x600 but even then the performance was terrible, choppy screen refresh, i'd say i was only getting about 12-20fps. I used to play this game on a celeron 400 with a 8mb voodoo 2000 and the performance was way great (up to the level with the dam where for some reason it got completely buggy and be unplayable at 1fps). also q3 arena and unreal xmp play terribly on this machine. so no point in playing lan games after work.
    :(

Before you consider buying another card, check your dell mobo. Some of the dimensions don't have AGP slots!

it should be a bit below gf4mx levels. h&d should still run fine however. any games from that era ran nicely for me on an 82810e.
the latest driver or trying something from here might be worth a shot

    /edit
if unreal2 & quake 3 are unplayable, its waaaaaay below gf4mx levels...

wasnt thinking of buying a new graphics card for it, doubt it the company would fork out for it either....
just wanted to see how bad integrated graphics truely are.Ta for the links superfly i'm actually astonished at how utterly crap they are..

i think its the 2000 dimension series that doesn't have the agp slot

dell isn't to bad for graphics card at the moment imo, you can upgrade from a 5200 to a 9800 pro for only a €100 which is a bargain

This might seem like a dumb question, especially when you said Unreal and Q3A play badly on it, but did you install patch 1.3 on it? i know the game was bugged to death originally. I used to get to the second level (where they dress in civillian clothes) and the characters would have heart attacks and die without getting shot unless i installed the patch.

    Nero

You sure it's not an 9800SE?

Also, not all integrated graphics are crap.
The nForce2 Ultra IGP chipset has decent enough graphics.
Obviously not on par with a slot-in card, but they are usable for most applications.

I've never heard of a fast graphics part off Intel though :)

Was asked to assess the best replacement path for all the PC's in my office this morning. First thing I noticed was that I'll do some kind of deal and get myself that 9800 pro for €105 :D:D:D:D

Ach the weird and wonderful configuration game that's called Dell

Mind you have to add 21% VAT to that, so that makes it a hefty €127 :D

BTW jes-computer have gone down in price to near the €200 mark again for the 9800 pro......
