i was waiting and waiting for soemthing to be on the news yesterday about this, but there was nothing on the TV news and little more than a few lines on the rte and irish independent websites.

does anyone know any details about it - it's quite a shocking thing to happen on campus! i saw most of it unfold from the library, but on the news there were no details about who he was, how he died or who found him. i wonder is there a reason why there's been so little coverage of it - or maybe that's just the conspiracy theorist in me. i know the observer and tribune will probably have something about it, but they don't come out for ages....

Latest reports (i.e. on my way home at 5:45 yesterday) said he was a chinese national in his early twenties who'd ben living rough, and had died of natural causes. Natural causes in this case probably means hypothermia or exhaustion or something like that.

    (I'm searching for a link :))

hmm i just got a text from a friend of mine saying it was a chemistry post grad or post doc, i didn't recognise the name he gave though, looking for more info

oh, man! if what seamus heard is true that's terrible! there's no reason why someone should die of exposure in somewhere like ucd - there's got to be one or more buildings that stay open late into the night - and even if they do close, there's enough couches and other places to bunk down, if the situation is that severe that someone's sleeping rough.
actually, my initial thought when i heard yesterday morning that someone was dead, was that that little old man who lives behind the library had died - i think he's been living in ucd for years - at least ten years, cos he was there when my brother was an undergrad and that was in the mid nineties. i thought services or security let him stay in the arts block or something - that's what i had heard.....
still, no matter who it was, it's a terribly shocking thing to happen!

Yeah, he's been here a good long while. He gets free food from the girls in the main restaurant afaik. Which is nice.

Can't believe that that homeless man in UCD is still there? He was there when I was a student and I left in 1991. I know that the security staff turned a blind eye to him, and the canteen staff used to feed him. He never bothered any of the students and seemed a gentle soul. We used to "forget" our loose change in the coffee dock when he was in the vicinity so that he could pick it up. I remember after one Christmas he had obviously been to some shelter and he'd cleaned up and had a shave and a haircut, and we were all deeply shocked at how young he was - only in his 30's at the most. I wonder if he was ever a student there?

i heard yesterday that he was a science post-grad student that died from an asthma attack but theres alot of rumours circling and that could just be another one...

He wasn't actually Chinese. Last I heard, he was a UCD student and died unsuspiciously.

I heard with some authority he was found ling face-down against the angled ramparts at the bottom of the library building. This probably indicates he was struggling with some kind of attack or ailement.

Certainly very tragic, but I think it's much too early for any of us to be speculating.

What's the story with the homeless guy, while we're on the topic? Does anyone know how he came to live in ucd?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,731 ✭✭✭DadaKopf

Not that this is fact or anything but while with the College Tribune, some people went to try to find out about him.

The story they came back with was: it's a bit mental (a manic depressive I think) who came to live on campus. Normally services would eject people like that but he allegedly saved a girl from being raped on campus and as a mark of appreciation, the university decided to let him stay on campus and treat him to free food, tea etc.

He keeps to himself and doesn't like conversing with students and talks to himself a lot. Seems harmless. Real shame.

Yeah I see him around all the time. It's nice that they give him free food in the canteen, and don't hassle him for hanging around - sort of re-affirms (sp) my belief that all ppl are basically good, and will help others out.

That is a tragedy. Wonder if more news will come out about it.

I also heard the rape prevention story, can't believe how long he's been around though!! also the age thing is plausible.

i can kinda confirm it was a chemistry post grad, it got announced to my class though i wasn't in at the time, apparently he worked in the same lab as me but under a different supervisor so i didn't know him but i think i might know who he is

he's named on the front page of todays college tribune. I believe he had an asthma attack, fell unconcious and died of exposure from there. mad, you know neither the hour nor the place. :(

yeah apparently a library worker actually saw him and jus thought he was asleep. I heard he's a demonstrator for second science chem.

There's a good chance no one will actually see this, so tragic about that man who died, but just wanted to share that the homeless man is still around 11 years later, everyone knows about him, and they posted an article on some official UCD site I can't remember where that told the story and he did save a girl from being raped few years back and that's why they allow him to hang around and give him food. He's no harm or bother to anyone at all, I actually enjoy seeing him 😊
