A key in cryptographic terms, is just a large number that is used to encrypt and decrypt data. It's basically just a really long numeric password. They are usually generated randomly by whatever software/hardware it is you're using.

for example in my netgear router, if I enable security, type a passphrase and click generate it gives me the key. Ta-da!
