Good graphical program for linux

I'm looking for a simple graphics program that i can use to create very basic bitmaps or jpegs.

The gimp is no use to me as its a bit overcomplicated. I need something similar to paint in windows. I know there is a "paint" program in redhat but its pretty crap.

Any suggestions? I'm gonna have a dig around in http://sourceforge.net/ in the meantime.

    ILUG alternatives page:

There is some mention of graphics apps there. I also remember a thread on ILUG about this some months back. It'll be in the archives somewhere. (EDIT - After a quick look my memory seems less good but I'm sure there was one)

The gimp is pretty damn easy to use, surely you can spend 2 minutes figuring it out.

The Gimp annoys me. You can't create geometric shapes for one. It's more of a photo-editing tool than a drawing tool. Xfig looks pretty good - www.xfig.org

I'll second the GIMP. I don't use it much but whenever I've needed to do any quick jobs it was fine. It's also improved a hell of a lot since I first used it. It's also packaged with almost every distribution so theres not hassle in getting it running.

Most Bitmap based graphics tools (GIMP, Photoshop, ...) aren't great for hand drawing.

exactly. i was going round in circles trying to find a function that would make a square or circle and couldn't find it. it really is an image editing tool.

here. this is a drawing i done on paint in windows and need something that can do all that in redhat.

You can draw squares and circles: use the selection tools (rectangle or ellipse) to draw a selection in the shape you want, convert the selection to a path and stroke the path.

To draw something like that I'd probably use OpenOffice.org's Draw and convert it to a bitmap afterwards. That way you still have a structured drawing that you can easily modify and re-export as required.

erm, id go for it its class, apart from the inability to draw box circle .etc

I'd recommend xfig - we use it all the time - it'll certainly do the sort of drawing you gave as an example - it's relatively easy to use too. You might need to use the gimp to convert its output though.

It looks like Dia an from the Gnome desktop would fit the bill judging from the example given.

Kivio might be just what you need.
You'd certainly find it easy to reproduce your diagram with it.
