The Upside Down Card Trick

Just trying getting my Grundig sky box unto the FTA menu with my sky card upside down after powering off the box. It would not work 101 still kept coming up as RTE1 and not BBC1 London. I had the same problem last week in a friend's house when I was showing him this trick. That was with an older skybox.

Tried it in my SKY+ Box and no problem.

Has something changed. I am interested to find out.

Perhaps the card was not fully inserted. The back of the card slot has the switch to "tell" the Digibox a card is in the slot, or else it will remember the last working card.

    sorry did i miss something...trick...
what channels are accessible if this works?
utv ch4? or just the bbc ones

    It gives the London EPG.

So "missing" BBC on Irish EPG appear.

CBBC, Cbeebies (replaced in evening by BBC3 and BBC4)
    BBC News 24
    BBC Parliament
All the other BBC1 and BBC2 regions (960 region)
101 and 102 will be BBC1 London and BBC2 England.

BBC Radio 1,2,3,4, 1xtra, five, 6, 7, 5Extra, Wales, Scotland, Ulster, BBC Asian Nation, and BBC Scots Gaelic radio.

It won't make any pay channels work nor ITV / C4 / Five

Only channels that work on a non-Digibox with no card.

Ok have tried it again just now on my Digibox Grundig GDS box. It still will not reboot to the default channel guide. I am doing all the right things like powering off the box first before swoping the card around and then powering back on. Tried it with the sky card and also a bank card and still no luck.

Will somebody who has the same king of digibox check to see if they now get the default menu. As I repeat I am having no problems getting the default menu with my Sky+ box.

    redabbey,

When you say "powering off" I hope you mean that you are completely removing the plug from the mains socket and not just turning it off at the wall socket ?...

Yes that is what I am doing. I am very familiar with how to get the FTA menu and have being doing this off an on ever since the BBC went FTA.

As I said it is only with the older Grundig digibox I have the problem with. Not my newer Sky+ box.

I am still curious to know if anybody else has had the same problem?

Has the problem box had the new updated EPG software??.......just a thought..........the last software update required a card in the slot to view the default EPG when it was introduced.......perhaps the latest software prevents a blank card...........no reports elsewhere though of this fault............could someone with an Irish sub and the new EPG try the upside down card to establish this is not the problem?

I also have a Grundig box(Sky). The upside down card trick does not work for me either. If I place a card in upside down I do not get anything but an error message about the card not working. However when I place my old card in the proper way I get the "101 BBC London" EPG. The old card being the light blue one with Sky Digital written across it.

On another topic I have noticed recently that BBC1 and 2 are now on ch 169 and 170 and LiveTv is on 214 now. Is this correct.

Mmmm, interesting. There will suddenly be a market for the original Sky digital cards if they are the only way to access the FTA EPG. I'll be loaded :D.

By the way, yes the channels have all(*) shifted down to remove the large gaps that were in the EPG.

    (*) well almost all.

I can confirm the Panasonic TUDSB 40 with the new software is also restricted to an Irish Sub card.

We never saw this coming did we, whats next, insisting the phone line is connected in order for cards to work?

The message is already appearing at bootup,to connect a line, I would put money on it that eventually they will insist on an operational line on all boxes in order for cards to work...its only a matter of time.

Why else would they want to restrict acess to the default EPG in Ireland or elsewhere, only to prevent acess to free EPG listings outside the region they are intended for?

Yep, bet FTV cards are next on the list.........................

Well now I know it was not just me and I was not loosing it!!

Surely all this removing/reinserting cards is bad for them ?

Could you not just use the "add channels" procedure for the BBC's instead (you need it anyway for BBC4)

Last time I checked BBC4 appears on 116 on the default EPG

The whole idea of the upside down card was to enable all the channels on an old subscription box to be viewed with all the listings on the default EPG, so it would have some use after the sub lapsed, not nescessarily swapping the cards over all the time

    edit

There has been a post on here reporting that Sky have confirmed a problem with the new software which can cause the "incorrect card" message to appear.............

    Hi,
I also had the stuck on irish epg thing with 2 grundigs that I had some yrs ago.
I found the old "unplug and hold in the backup button and replug" trick did the job.

Can you try this and see if the epg goes back to the "real" epg.

Been a long time to have done this so Tony can you confirm??

    Hope it helps.

Sorry I only have a sky + box here and it does not work with that, ASA cards tend to behave differently anyway so my set up may not be of much help.
