I am going to be going down to Blackwater as a friend of mine has a house down there and we want to go fishing. There is a beach about ten minutes away from his house in Blackwater and we were wondering if that is a good place to go fishing. Mainly asking locals here or people who have experience.

PS: Can a pike rod be used for beach casting??? And is 20lb line too strong?

    Cheers
    :)

Where in Blackwater? I fished there last year and have caught cod..
TBH any of those east wexford beaches should be ok..A pike rod with a 2oz weight should be ok, fish (esp bass if they are around) won't be too far out. A guy actually caught an 11 lb bass with a ****ty rod (one of those ones ye get in kits for the kids) on the beach in blackwater-right beside the old slipway, near where the stream enters the sea. That coast is well known for smooth-hound too, maybe a litlle further north.

    Hi JD,

Thanks for info. The areas are garryvadden/curraclow/ballyvaloo.

I probably spelled them wrong but are these good areas. Cheers JD.

    What bait should i use?

Can u spin in the sea???

    Cheers
    Mike :)

if the beaches aren't frequented by bathers, I think you should be ok. Try an evening rising tide. You should be able to pick up bait in Dave Scallans, near the wildfowl reserve-peeeler if you can get it, on size 1/0 + hooks (use bait elastic)
I never tried spiunning on this coast.
BTW there are a lot of ponds in that area, rarely fished, with substantial tench and rudd etc..
