Just been offered a new job with shift hours.

The shifts are 7am to 3pm, 2pm to 10pm and 10pm to 7am. These alternate each week, with 1 in 9 weeks being the night shift.

The shift allowance is 22%. Is it fair to say that the shift allowance should be paid every week?

Well, when they say shift allowance they're probably referring to the night shift only?

no, it should apply to all of your hours, becasue all of your hours are shift hours. Just because they are during the daytime, does not mean they arent shift hours.
Shift pay is basically compensation for working crap hours.
When i worked in NEC, we got 33% addition to our pay for working 12 hour shifts.

That's not too bad Jesus, considering they're only 8 hour shifts, and only 1 in 9 is the night one.
Don't disregard the 2-10 shift though - how often will you be on that? IMO, that's worse than the night shift. You get home from work, have some food, and head to bed. Then you get up lateish, have some food and wait until it's time to go to work. Unless you have mates who are also nightowls and will hang around in your house until 2am, you are literelly without a life for an entire week. It can be quite exhausting and demoralising. At least with the nightshift, you can get up in the late afternoon and go to the shops, or the bank or whatever.

    I agree with you Seamus.

I've worked in previous jobs on a 1.30 to 10 shift. By the time I finished work and got into town, it was just slightly too late to be going out (the alcohol wouldn't start kicking in until it is time to go home.)

And in the mornings I'd be getting up at noon. Basically it meant no life, and it was quite depressing.

I also had to work weekends which really helped!

    ...

I don't think there are any laws regarding shift allowances, so I'd be pretty confident the f*ckers are only referring to the late shift!

I've worked 7am - 7pm and 7pm - 7am in the past. 12 hour shifts really start to grind you down by the end of a long hard week.

You _should_ get the shift allowance based on all your hours of work and at a figure of 22% it sounds about right for that.

Sweet thanks. The hours dont really bother me, I just graduated from college and all my mates are geeks!! Late nights are the flavour of the day!
