Just reading the inventor thread and trying to think of a sport the last while where women and men can compete equally with no handycaps

I know physically men have more muscle and devlope differently so were better at running and stuff like that, but what about sports like .... darts why is the top woman darts player not as good as the top mens darts player? I can't think of another sport that uses less muscles or depends less on your frame, sure that english bloke that wins everything is about 25 stone.

I know everyone will talk about the women golfer, and fair play to her but why isnt there more of her :) but is there any sport where men and women compete together without handycaps for a certain sex?.

There was a women who competed in a means snooker tournament last year , cant remember which one. She got to the second round but had to pull out as her match in the mens tournament would have clashed with her match in the womens tournament .

Polo - Women and Men compete on a par.
    Three-Day eventing - As above.
    National Hunt(Jockeys) - As above.

    Golf is another sport.

The PGA has no rules banning women. The LPGA does though... of course you could debate that gold is not a sport.

Is 'gold' a sport? That sure would be a good debate buddy!

National Hunt to you inferior life forms would be known as 'horse racing'.
That thing you spend your dole/grant on in paddy powers.

    how about set-dancing? technically it's a sport!

As far as I know there is only one women in the world who has a world record in a sport in which men and women compete equally - free diving. Tanya Streeter decended to a depth of 400 ft on a single to break the record.

How about bowling? Bowling doesn't really depend on one's build, it depends more on the skill. The best bowlers in America are quite heavy looking tbh.

In tennis in 1973 Billie Jean King played Bobby Riggs in a match dubbed "Man Versus Woman" She beat him in straight sets. This match was televised and well publicised.

    More on that here

When digesting that result it it might also be be worth noting that Riggs (like his name might imply) was a notorious hustler. Prior to losing to the (at the time) World #2 female player Billy Jean King, Riggs had beaten the (at the time) world #1 female player Margaret Smith Court in straight sets.

    Funny eh?

Men tend to have a greater % of muscle while women have a greater % of fat. So most tests of speed/strength are out.

    Then there is stamina.
AFAIK the only physical sports where women should have a physical advantage are ultra long distance running / cycling and swimming - a lot of that would be due to supposed incresed pain resistance. The marathon would not be considered ultra by any standards. There was an ultra run in Ireland back in the late 80's - it was invitation only Dublin - Cork, many of the people who finished it could not be described as normal (recovered addicts etc.) with regard to thier psylogical outlook.

Anyway commercial sport means people cheat or at best use unnatural training and diet regiemes so not I would not count most of them as repesentative examples of their sexes.

Tests of Skill should have even honours - do they ?
    Shooting
    Skijumping
    Gymnastics

BTW: Olympic Beach volleyball is not a real sport (indoor/outdoor rule etc.) and letting pro's get olympic medals for tennis..

Lady's shot puts and discus are lighter so they throw fruther than men (is this true ?)

erm in fairness the man was 55, if she played the men's current #1 at the time she'd have been beaten, just as todays female #1 would be beaten by her male counterpart. Im not being sexist, just stating a fact.

I wouldn't say golf is even. Men will generally have more strength and will therefore be able to get more power behind the ball and hit it further. I still think a lot of things could be mixed though

Women compete with, and often beat, men in show jumping.

I was watching an old "They Think It's All Over" a while ago and there was a women's skydiving team on. That struck me as a bit odd. Surely if there was one thing that the two sexes would be equal at it would be falling to earth from a plane.

there is a sports board you know

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,038 ✭✭✭✭Sparks

Target shooting splits male and female events up at wolrd cup level and above - women shoot forty shots, men shoot sixty - but until 1982, they shot shoulder-to-shoulder in perhaps the hardest event, 50m three-position shooting. And today, though we do take the scores from their first forty shots for an exercise, women and men shoot the same event with the same equipment in target shooting events up to National level.
(And the women do better as a rule, because the female anatomy is better suited to precision shooting).

Monty , if i had of put this up on a sports board it probably woulda just got abuse and jokes, i wanted an actual answer.

Sparks ... so once the sport goes professional they split them up? and in world cup standard do women still have better results then men? if so then you have found an answer to my question.

As for people saying ... back in 1973 there was one woman .... if one woman can do it then theres no physical excuse for all other women. other wise i would just put it down to either the male players age or just having a bad day. Im sure if the number 1 female player in tennis played the number1 male then the male would win. Tennis has alot to do with muscle. shooting is more along the lines of what i was thinkin of, u dont need muscle to shoot, just skill . And saying that there anatomy is better suited is no excuse for blokes :) we should just try harder :)

Erm, technically the sport never goes professional. Unless you join the army, that is.

Well, as I said, there are different male and female events - some use different equipment. But the best answer I can give is the 1976 (whoops, got the date wrong in an earlier post) three-position 50m shoot, where both Margaret Murdock and Lanny Bassham put in the same score. Lanny was awarded the gold on countback, though he's protested publicly both then and since that it should have been a case where two gold medals were awarded, and he hauled Margaret up onto the first place podium spot with him when the medals were being awarded.
Im sure if the number 1 female player in tennis played the number1 male then the male would win.
Has taken place, Billie Jean King versus Bobby Riggs. King won.

No, actually I was being serious - it's a technical point. Women's hipbones flare outwards more than men's do, and that makes it easier for them to put their elbows on their hipbones for shooting standing:

women get no where near the men in cycling.

    i) They can't get there body fat low enuff.
ii) Cycling has speed requirements randomly during races that even if women trained specifically for them - they wouldn't be able to get near.
iii) Takes a certain amount of strength to race up the Alps.

I'm talking ULTRA long distance - none of this micky mouse 200Km stuff.

Anyway they call the time trial "the race of truth" (or someting) 'cos all the other times they use tactics - so men don't race flat out all the time (never watched the womens tour de france which takes place earlier the same day on the same route). Then again while the average woman is supposed to have a higher pain threshold than men* I guess that some men have unnatural pain thresholds.

When my girlfriend gets hurt, I wish it was me instead (girls in the audiance go Ahhhh...) no it's not like that - its just so won't have to hear her moaning about it - Ed Byrne

It doesn't count if they're not hot. Cos then they're not really women.

Kim Clijsters was playing a match against Lleyton Hewit on TV today. Hewitt won the first 7-5, didn't see the rest. I presume it was some charidee exhibition thingy, but he didn't seem to be going easy on his wee missus.

The women race over shorter distances and at slower speeds. The same goes for every sport.

    45km094 JEANNIE LONGO-CIPRELLI (FRA)
    49km441 CHRISTOPHER BOARDMAN (GBR)
the one hour records. roughly 10% difference. significant IMO.

Its called the race of truth because you can't hide if you want to. To win you can't hide regardless.

In the site that was posted up earlier about billie king, it says that Riggs beat court, another top female tennis player before he took on billie. It also says how he was "a champion of yore", and that he was a champion of the 1940s. There are also several refferences to him being an old man & past his best.

Is this really a great example? I mean basically you people are pointing to a woman beating an old man and shouting "look, see women are just as good as men". Lets reverse situations and get a 55 year old former tennis champion to take on the current mens #1.

back on topic, is a big difference between men & women in fencing? Gymnastics, or High Diving (from a spring board etc)
