Linux GUI for windows?

I'm just wondering if there are any shell replacements for Win2K/XP by Gnome, KDE, etc (the usual suspects)... as I see the GIMP already has a Win32 version... why not a whole GUI?
I know it seems a bit daft developing something for a competing OS, but maybe Joe Bloggs would feel a little bit more at home when he tries linux having already felt the GUI.... could be good for linux in the long run... not to mention the support of a whole other creative community for things like new skins etc.
Of course the simple solution I know some of you are thinking is "just use linux"... but it doesn't suit my needs unfortunately.

You can use cygwin to run a xserver locally and then run clients locally too. Tried it out fo 30 minutes one day. Wasn't particularly useful.

Pop 'Cygwin' into that there google box, maybe add 'KDE' or 'GNOME' for more specific links into getting it running, it does require some fiddling afair.

Im also pretty sure there was an enlightenment port for windows NT a long while ago, I dont know if its still being developed though.

<edit - bah for me being slow etc etc>

You could try using a live cd like Knoppix or Mandrake Move. I know its not quite the same

I have tried it, I found it quite nice, but after a while it started to get a bit cranky about the fact I had StyleXP installed at one point.
A fun distraction, but not a replacement for either the linux BlackBox or for the default win UI

Well its more or less a case of needing to run Win32 applications, while having a decent GUI at the same time... I've had some linux distros that I was reasonably happy with, but once you have it all set up - you realise that you're missing all your best apps* and a lot of times hardware that you really need.

I might give blackbox a try.
    Thanks.
*(ugh, don't even mention WINE :/)

    Which apps, exactly?

The other way is to chose the windows/redmond options on knoppix
also WINE allows you to choose 95 vs. 98 behaviour too.
you could also use VNC to connect into multiple Linux desktops on a server.

I used to use Litestep back in the day. It was kewl enough, though I don't know if it would teach you anything about linux.
