Cant wait to see what ATI throw @ it, (Even better me thinks)

What type of cooling is on these cards, not like the 5950 I hope.

    Thanks joePC

I'd like to see ATI do even better too, but 12 pipelines to NV's 16 is a lot of bandwith to make up. Rumour has it that they might have a surprise paper launch this Monday.

The cooling shouldn't be an issue with the first cards as the chips will be moderately clocked (they should o/c well like the first GF3 & 4 cards). The 2005 highly clocked versions might have onboard helicopters though :)

Errr.. the 5950 has a excellent cooler. Quiet, slick and very efficient. Its really annoying the amount of FUD about FX cards thats floating around.

perhaps he is just referring to the fact that it can take up second slot unlike typical typical radeons. i did see a nice msi 5950 though that had a nice single slot solution

i am also intertested in these new cards though by the time i buy a new graphics card i will probably need a new motherboards as there will be no decent agp ones still knocking round :)

Possibly, but in reality using the slot next to the gfx card is not a good idea thanks to heat and (perhaps redundant) IRQ/ACPI issues on any high end graphics card. I rather see it put to use in the form of card cooling.

aye i don't use the slot next to my card either, but if i had a two slot card i wouldn't use the slot under that again i don't think

The nVidia cards have a plastic covering (duct) over the heatsink, its designed to pull air from the bottom of the card through the plastic duct and out the back of the case. It shouldnt make much different to use the slot next to the card as its not designed to pull air from that area anyway.

My ti4200 already takes up 4 slots (P4 HSF), so a 2-slot card would be an improvement :D

I personally dont use this slot either, but the cooler on the 5950 is hugh and it still heats up like fcuk, mainly cause its an overclocked 5900.

Anyway water cooling is the way to go,

    Thanks joePC

    Sir Random

    3DMark Score: 16227 3D marks

From a Ti4200 very impressive is that a P4EE or standard?

    Thanks joePC

I always leave the first PCI slot free for graphics card cooling regardless of whether it's need or not. I'd only fill it if all the others were used.

Yes, the cooler takes up the (mostly) unused second slot and heats up... that means its working and working well.

The 5950 is a refined (only one step off hand picked) 5900, clocked and tested for higher frequencies, no doubt about it.

It's a standard P4 Northwood. It gave the ti4200 a new lease of life :)

    Bollox :p

Lets wait til theres some concrete evidence as to what it can do at stock speed for the average joe. 31k is there for anyone who has a 3Ghz FX51 with a 9800XT and 600+ clocks. To add another 5k to an extremely modded machine is very naive. And it's not exactly easy to get over 24k+ either. Actual benchies please :)

Well, according to the latest "scoop" from The Inquirer (yeah, I know!), the score can be quite easily explained away. In fact, the story really deals a blow to the NV40 altogether. Don't bet on ATi having to make up 4 pipelines after all...

And, according to EliteBastards, the R423 may well have 16 pipelines. Worth waiting a couple of months for...

i thought the r423 was just a pci-E version of the r420 and was being released at the same time?
