Video quality question

    Hi All,

I'm looking for some help with a video transfer. I have some .wmv files which I wanted to put on a cdr in VideoCD format, using Nero.

I used a freeware converter (Stoik) to convert into .avi format and burned them onto the cd however when played in my DVD player they are quite pixelated especially on large, plain areas.

So my question is, can I improve the quality when converting to avi (or would mpeg/SVCD be better , which I have to pay for?), transferring to VCD or are the videos just too small to make a good transition to TV format.

The files are all 60 MB plus, 720x300. The avi video compressor I used was Microsoft Video1

    Rgds,
    Ed

DVD players rarely support DivX, so your best bet would be too reduce the size of the video (i.e. reduce the pixels) and then encode at a relatively high quality SVCD. i.e. <1400kbps.

Ideally you'd just encode the files into a DivX or Xvid (my personal choice) avi, and then wait for a standalone DivX player to become cheap enough for ya.

60mb files????? in wmv format id say these ate either short clips or the quality is rubbish to start with, i have gotten some tv episodes like this in the past myself,?? ne way the best way to sort this out is to download a program called tmpgenc, ull find a link in the tools section of www.dvdrhelp.com, use its wizard to convert the file to mpeg 1 and run it through the vcd wizard in nero, this will stop nero from encoding it itself,(thats never good)
1 question why where u going to avi first???? never tried feeding nero a wmv file so i assume thats why

I'd agree with calex71's thoughts on the small file sizes.

Another thing to bear in mind is that (depending on the source) the WMVs may have variable frame rates - this is a way of improving compression when there's little on-screen action, but if you try to convert one of these files to a fixed rate file (such as an AVI or MPEG) the attempt to "fill in" the missing frames can result in awkward "jerking" in the output video.

Good luck with it - I'm seriously considering hacking an XBOX to run XBOX Media Centre instead :D
