i have an old scsi card which seems to be installed automatically in XP. An LSI Logic 53C875/53C876, appears to be compaq.
I have the cable i got with it and a Compaq 9.1gb 10k SCSI-3 Hard Drive with SCA 80pin interface.
I purchased an adaptor to convert the 80-pin to 68-pin however i dont really know what im doin as ive never dealt with SCSI before.
I dont know what jumper settings to use.
I have tried booting with everything connected up, using the internal and external 68-pin connector on the card. XP gets to loading screen, then scsi hdd spins for a sec, then stops and continues to do that.
    Any help Greatly appreciated!!!

I'm using one of those adapters too, but with an adaptec card. I don't use any jumpers. When you boot up the pc, does the scsi card bios come up on screen, and you get a prompt to press CTRL + A to enter the config screen? I did that, went in and saw my drive was on ID position 0, and the scsi card was on 7. These are the default values I think.

I'm tired and probably not thinking well enough to be of any help.

But yeah, rather than master slave, scsi uses ID numbers to identify drives on the chain (can't use master and slave as scsi can have more than 2 devices on a cable)

just make sure the drive is on ID 0. Should work then.....

I dont get any SCSI bios when i boot up. I tried without any jumpers in the adaptor card and various settings on the hdd, but still it spins and stops repeatidly at windows logo screen, maybe the hdd is ****ed. The controller card is very old. But i have an adaptec 39160 arriving hopefully tomorrow, so i will try with that.
i really dont know what im doing :D

Those adapters can have jumpers for delay start and remote motor start as well which is handy if you have a whole bunch of drives you dont want them all spinning up at the same time, check to see if one or both are shorted by mistake ... but then again the drive may be buggered ..

So I got my adaptec card today. I first tried booting with no jumpers in the adaptor and some in the drive, the card detected the drive at ID 12 (after a bit of spinning for a sec and stopping repeatidly) and the card at ID 7. I got into Windows and and the drive showed up in Device Manager fine, but not in My Computer.
I also got an error when i tried to format the drive in the bios, and also it said 'remote drive start failure' as far as i can remember.

I then tried booting without jumpers in either the card or the adaptor, and basically the situation is the exact same, just drive is at ID 0. I think i might have to insert a jumper in the drive for it to spin up properly?

    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks.

On the drive itself there are jumpers (really small ones) that may be set as well, these will override the ones that the drive sees at the connector ... check the compaq/hp website to see what is supposed to be shorted .... there should be a datasheet showing what the on-drive jumpers mean.
