I'd be up for that, and I reckon i'd know at least another two or three people from Dublin who'd travel down as long as the selection was good... What kind of a set up are you planning?

    any definite details?

i am sounding out opinions before i invest in the project.
    PROVISIONALY:
20 films over 2 screens from 6/7pm on a friday to 4/5pm on the sunday.
Hopefully in NUIgalway, so the screens will be beside each other.(depends on sound etc.)
Will arrange bulk discount for accomadation in hoetl/hostel
there will be a reception (food&drink) on opening night and organised socials.
"Possiblely" the premier of an new irish horror film
Tickets available for fri,sat & sun . and a cheaper weekend pass, prob. around 25/30 eurofor weekend pass.

One thing you don't have to worry about is the film quality.
    The Devils Backbone
    Kronos
    The Eye
    Dark Water
    The Cabinet Of Doctor Calgari
    The Kingdom
    House on Haunted Hill
Last House on the Left (1972)
    Cat People – 1942
    Tenebre
    Nosferato
    Event Horizon
    Ringu
    Audition

    that kind of thing.

I presume it'll be projected DVD then, and no prints? Still, sounds good, keep us up to date with the details...

Trying to get Conor McMahon's film shown are you? I'm slightly annoyed, because I can't see it being finished until next years Horrorthon in the IFI and I won't be in the country for it...

Despite having seen quite a few of those already, I'd certainly be up for a Horror fest. In fact, I'd even like to help out, and be involved if I could at all, if that's possible.

I'm wondering though, is that Kronos, the Guillermo Del Toro film?
If so, I'd absolutely love to see that.

    Yes it is.
thats just a list of the top of my head. i am looking for suggestions for something i may have forgotten.the thing : defineatly. Am also currently sussing out where in galway i can get the best deal on accomodation. theres seems to be a lot of interest from dublin so what i might do if theres definite interest is to arrange for a private bus to come from dublin straight to galway and back again to eliminate some of the hassle and expense with travel. there will also be a forum for people who want to cooperate on transport, car-sharing etc. and provisionally looking at the end of may, begining of june.

aye, i'd be more than happy to provide my copy of the thing for the event

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭lodgepole

It's important as well to provide films that people haven't seen. As much as I love the thing, and the texas chainsaw massacre, and the evil dead trilogy, we've all seen them. Seeing The Thing projected on DVD isn't quite the same as seeing it projected on film in the IFI... You should try to strike a delicate balance between films people haven't seen and films people want to see.

And for the love of god, please find a cannibal/zombie film of some description...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 319 ✭✭pucan

i think theres quite a few films on that list that most people wouldn't have seen. and thanks for the offer of DVDs guys but to legally screen to a public audience i have to rent the films from distributors, with rights, for about 40 euros a pop. And no its not a boards thing, its a public event . i'm just telling you because i know theres some real film fans on these boards.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 319 ✭✭pucan

aoh and as regards a zombie film, there will definetly be one. just not decided yet.
suggestions? the obvious Night of..., Dawn of.... etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

How about Return Of The Living Dead? Classic 80's cheese!
Or perhaps one of Fulci's Zombie movies, like Zombie Flesh Eaters, or The Beyond? I'd reconmend the latter.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 319 ✭✭pucan

Return Of The Living Dead is not a horror film!

I saw Return of the Living Dead in the IFI a few years ago and it's one of the best group flicks i've ever sat through...

Zombie Creeping Flesh is a good one too... I'm a huge Cannibal fan, though i've seen most of them. Cannibal Holocaust would be an interesting one to show.

Black Christmas is a great horror film that few people have seen or heard of. Worth considering.

    jeepers creepers :D
At the beginning when they're being chased by the truck it shows such potential then it just snowballs into a pile of piss. AND THE WINGS, WTF?

Seriously though, Night of the living dead, the thing and perhaps evil dead 1. Peter Jacksons stuff is great but far too comical

I wouldn't show "The Eye" or "Dark Water". Both aren't much good, never mind scary. In fact I just saw Dark Water today and it was pretty dull. I'd recommend instead "Ju-On" which translates, I think, as either the curse or the grudge. It's actually been remade in Japan and is again been remade with Sarah Michelle Geller pretty soon. I saw the original which I think was made for Japanese tv and it has been the only film since the 80's that has made me look over my shoulder while watching it.

Black Christmas is a great horror film that few people have seen or heard of. Worth considering.

Black Christmas is really excellent. Pre-dates Halloween & Friday the 13th for the whole serial killer POV stuff. Got it on DVD from Amazon few years ago. I was terrified watching it late at night all alone. In short, an excellent horror movie, and I'd highly recommend it, especially, like Lodgepole mentioned, few people have seen it :D

Have to say, Amazon.com is pretty cool for finding older or obscure horrors on dvd for cheap around Halloween time, found many a bargain.

What about 'When A Stranger Calls' ? I really think the opening & end sequences in that are damn quality stuff. 'When A Stranger Calls Back', the 90s sequel has a really excellent opening, but the rest is fairly crap. Pity really!

Have to agree with Raoul Duke about 'The Eye'. I only saw it recently, but I was quite underwhelmed with the whole movie. It had a few moments, but I never thought it lived up to any of the hype I'd heard about it.
Didn't think much of 'Last House on the Left' either, it's more cheesy & laughable than anything!

As for a good zombie movie, I can't think of anything apart from the obvious Night,Dawn,Day...

    Other cool movies to consider:
    Stage Fright
    Alice Sweet Alice
    Session 9

thanks for all the suggestions guys. will update you on situation in a couple of days. am waiting on the banks loan decision to finance the project.

I thought The Eye was quite scary, though Dark Water was indeed overrated. Might I suggest Ginger Snaps? Not the slightest bit scary, but a great movie and I'd love to see it in a group. And here's another vote for Session 9 and hurrah! for the original Haunting.
aoh and as regards a zombie film, there will definetly be one. just not decided yet.

28 Days Later? The original Dawn...?

Pucan this is a fantastic idea, I am definitely interested. I do believe also, you may have the finest taste in horror films in the world.
One thing you don't have to worry about is the film quality.

    The Devils Backbone
    Kronos
    The Eye
    Dark Water
    The Cabinet Of Doctor Calgari
    The Kingdom
    House on Haunted Hill
Last House on the Left (1972)
    Cat People – 1942
    Tenebre
    Nosferato
    Event Horizon
    Ringu
    Audition

I assume that you are going to obtain a non-theatrical license for this festival?

If not, you are liable for a big fine from the film distributors.

The Haunting original is really excellent too, forgot to mention that! Love the name btw, Jill

I'm still waiting for a director's cut Event Horizon. I remember reading when it came out that 45mins or so was cut out for the version that was released. AFAIK, the DVD doesn't have any deleted stuff on it.

How about Frightmare directed by Pete Walker. That's a pretty scary film. Low budget, but grim, creepy and a bit disturbing.

Or maybe Mario Bava's A Bay of Blood. I think that's often mentioned as one of the first slasher movies.

Another one that I like is Race with the Devil. Like a cross between a horror movie (satanism being the theme) and a road movie. Lots of paranoia and creepiness in this one.

Yet another film that scared me was Spielberg's Duel. This is a road movie but in my view it's also an extremely effective and scary horror movie.

To be honest Ginger Snaps 2 isn't half as good as the first one. But as most people haven't seen it it might very well add to the draw of the event. However what's it's DVD status? Also, Ginger Snaps 3 is being released in Canada this month (according to IMDB anyway)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,090 ✭✭✭jill_valentine

GS2....that would be sooo cool...I haven't seen it, but it would be worth admission just to hear that fantastic 15 Minutes conversation quoted on IMDB at the moment...

I didn't think The Eye was scary at all. Dark Water was kind of though. It had so much tension and suspense. I liked it alot. Although, the two are similar in ways. Both good films anyway imo.
