    Hey all,
Can anyone tell me what type of faster internet connection i can get for home use. Im using a 56k modem at the moment and it ain't doin the job for me no more.
I posted a simliar message on the Tech board but got no replies so tongue.gif
Hoping one of you out there can give me some info.

Is the Eircom highspeed isdn line worth getting and what would the typical cost be for it to be set up. Like it says it sells a modem for about £100 but not much else so what type of money are we talking about to get it installed and network cards or whatever?
Im in the Kildare by the way.

    ANY INFO is great.

    Cheers,
Gideon (missin' the sig pic n the img tag!)

ISDN (branded as Hispeed for residential customers) is costed below. You need a Terminal Adaptor ~100 pounds. ISDN means you can have 2 lines (phone / fax / modem / alarm). Upgrading a normal phone line (PTSN) is cheaper (not all lines will be capable of this). Getting anything better is difficult (and potentially expensive) unless you have a cable operator installing DSL lines (I think Chorus is the only one at the moment).

    From another post:

You effectively have two lines on your BRI (basic rate ISDN - also BRA basic rate access, samething) - 'A' & 'B' channels ('A' channel has priority of use unless configured otherwise). When you are connecting with both channels you are really making two parallel phonecalls - thats why the ISP needs to have an ISDN modem at the other end. You are charged the normal rate for each call. The line rental is charged higher though (not quite sure what that adds up to). I looked up 'ISDN' on www.eircom.ie and under 'ISDN Basic Rate Access' used the FAQ section :

    "Price
The price of eircom isdn is divided into three parts:

A connection charge -this one-off charge covers a new line box for your premises plus the necessary changes to your exchange equipment and your customer record. Currently, eircom isdn connection costs £164.46( 208.82 ) plus VAT.
A rental charge - rental of your eircom isdn line costs £29( 36.82 ) per month plus VAT. This is the charge for two communications channels. In addition, it includes the rental of 2 new telephone numbers.
Usage charges - eircom isdn Voice and Data calls are charged at normal telephone rates for local, National and International calls. eircom has a number of discount schemes, which offer savings on eircom isdn data calls. "

Please note that Eircom are currently changing their pricing structure in relation to non-call charges (new lines, account changes, line rentals, etc.).

    Thanks for the info.
I knew how the eircom isdn works.
Is that Chorus thing really avaible.
Right now our cable tv is provided by them.
When we signed up for it we were told that it would get more channels and the like but also that it could take over our phone and use the cable for internet calls. Mmmmmm i didn't think that was going to happen for ages as they usually take years to do everything?

I'll try ring them up durning the week but if any one knows for sure let us know, that would be ****in class!

    Cheers,
    Gideon

As far as I know Chorus are the only ones providing it here. ntl have stopped subscribing new ADSL customers. These are the only 2 licensed at the moment to provide cable TV services. Eircom want to provide ADSL, but it won't be worth their while until they can also provide TV services, which they aren't allowed do until 2004 (IIRC). So yes Chorus appears to be your best chance.
