I just spotted in Iris Oifigiuil that 'From Dusk Till Dawn' has been unbanned.

    http://www.irisoifigiuil.ie/pdfs/ir270204.pdf

Not that it makes much of a difference after the amount of times it's been shown on television, but at least they've finally gotten rid of this ridiculous ban. Now we can watch stripper-vampires being brutally murdered in peace.

I bought it on DVD over 3 years ago.. and I bought the special edition double-disc pack a few months ago.. even though it has been banned in this country for years..

Never knew it was banned either, watched it on Channel Four a few years back. Good show too.

yeah, it was pretty easy to see... anyone remember the Irish Gov asking Channel 4 not to show it because we'd see it and its banned here??

-yeah.. sure thing, we'll just not show this film we payed big money for and that will attract alot of viewers, because you dont want your citizens to see it (even though most of them have sky movies, where it was shown, or have ordered it online, or gotten it through some not quite legit shop.... no problem at all

I'm sure I bought the soundtrack when it didn't come out. Must have a root around in the middle room for it.

All of the above...it just makes a mockery of the whole censorship process.

    Ditto.

At least cinemas would make some attempt to bar under-agers, but having SKY beam that filth into our living rooms where kids can see it and not having to answer to anyone....[edit] [/edit]

Technically it would be possible to ban SKY films to Irish card cards. Also it could be made a condition of being allowed to sell their product in this country that all channels agree to follow our laws. I mean it is illegal to do illegal things, at least it was last time I checked.

Bottom line - since we have no control on SKY, there is nothing stopping them doing other things - look at how biased the US and Venezualian media are - It is possible for them to broadcast FTA loads of channels to get us hooked and then mix in some propoganda - thankfully at persent they are too interested in ripping us off to look at the long term.

    IMHO that is.

I don't know how from dusk till dawn got banned. Ok, there's a lot of gore, but gore is hardly that psychologically harmful, is it???

I can understand films like straw dogs getting banned, that had a pornographic rape seen, but this???

The only scene that I think would bother censors is that scene where the Chinese kid gets chunks taken out of him by the vamps, and the sis has to shoot him, and he explodes. Even that is pretty tame (in south park, kenny dies in every episode, and they let that show on tv).

There was a much more colder scene in Assault on Precinct 13, where a 12yr old girl gets shot in the head by some scumbag. That was far worse.

I got mine on VHS from the isle of man, anyway.

Oh yeah, and since we don't pay an english licence fee for the tv that we get from England, it was really cheeky for RTE to ask channel 4 to not show it.

That murder in Assault on Precinct 13 is HILARIOUS. Talk about getting creamed.

The only reason it was banned was becuase of the religious thingy's in it. It was always aest to get a hold of. 'twas deemed "blasphemous" by the censors and promptly banned probably. As far as i know Life of Brian is still banned (despite being widely available to rent/buy for years)

Bit like them banning show girls, which is still banned. The reason was that it had no plot apparantly, just lots of nudity. Sounds like a sky one show really.

Here's the irish government Rules for Banning a film
"A film can be certified as unfit for viewing (in other words, banned) because the Censor is of the opinion that the film is indecent, obscene or blasphemous or that viewing it might be contrary to, or undermine public morality. The Censor may also rule that certain parts of a film must be removed before it can be certified for viewing. The Censor must also view and approve the advertising material connected to the film to ensure it is appropriate. A copy of the Certificate must be shown for at least 10 seconds immediately before the film is shown."

It wasn't banned because of the nudity. It was banned because there is a rape scene near the end of the film. In the UK it would have been banned too, had that scene not been heavily cut.

And the film is hilarious. I highly recommend it.

According to the press release it was the fact it had no plot.

Really?? I thought dogma wouldn't be allowed to be released on video then:confused: (although it wasn't put into any major cinemas, apart from the IFC, I think).

It was in all the cinemas. I saw it in the UCI, but it also showed in the IFC and Virgin cinemas.

Life of Brian is not banned in this country, though it was at one point. Films can no longer be banned, as far as I know, for reasons of blasphemy.

I believe it was banned because quentin Tarintions character showed no remose for raping the woman at the start and didn't get his come uppance.

that movie confused me... i thought it was going to be a great film about half way through, and then vampires appeared.... what the hell!!!!

It's ment to be that George hated the documentry that came with the film, because it shows him cursing his head off, and getting pissed off over fluffed lines.

What the hell are they banning movies for in this day and age, when anyone can download/ order the DVD over the internet.
Have they banned any movies recently? Also what movies are still banned?
