Sky+ problems

    Hi there

I got Sky+ in 2 days ago, it was recording fine but then I set it up to record 3 movies during the night. I awoke to find that it had recorded 2 of them but recording had failed on the other one "Videodrome". This recording was not clashing with any others.
I thought maybe just a glitch, but then last night I was recording "Long Time Dead" at 10.30 and was watching paramount. At around 12 midnight I went into the epg to see what was on when the epg just froze. The box would not let me use any of the functions, the epg music was playing but I could not move or get out of it. Even the power off button would not work and I had to plug out from the wall. When I turned it back on it told me that "Long Time Dead" recording had failed.
It seems a bit weird getting these 2 problems within 2 days. anybody have any idea?

    Corm500:confused:

Rest assured. You're not the only one.

Sky+ does not seem to be reliable at all. Some people are happy and it works perfectly for them while others are having a nightmare.
I'm on my 5th sky+ box since the software update in December and sky refuse to admit there is a problem. Telling me that its too hot etc.
Its on a shelf on its own. That part of the room is no hotter than the rest of the room 20 degrees at most. I checked.
Why does my other equipment or my pc in my office not break down as often i asked them. Then the engineer admitted its a **** quality build and he replaces loads every day.

I had similar problems with mine when I first got it but seems to have settled down now. We monitor the failure rate of the ones we sell and its currently 3 % which is high compared to .5 % on panasonic digiboxes.

Installed mine on Sunday last and all is well with recording , signal levels etc but they do get pretty hot and the fan is so silent you might think it is not working

One thing I have noticed is if the instant rewind is enabled and you change channel it freezes for a milisecond on the channel you have being watching before it changes to the new channel

The switching with the +/- ch buttons is much faster, but when it comes to actually tuning (the blue screen between changeover ) it is much slower than the Panasonic was. I understand there is more things to process (pause, rewind, etc etc ) but as a channel hopper who can never settle on anything!it is a bit annoying

I've had Sky+ about a month. Seems to work very well. I've had 2 failed recordings out of about 2 per day. Reason unknown.

I was very concerned about overheating and have a PC case fan just behind the fan grill, which keeps it much cooler. However it appears that the last software update (or rather firmware update) causes the sky+ internal fan to come on much more often... which is kind of an acknowledgement that it was too hot before.

It's perhaps too early to say if you have a bad box. maybe you havn't got the last update yet and the box is too hot?

    Ix.

The only real problem I'v had was a failed modem, I'v had an odd recording glitch, but otherwise I am very happy with its and wll worth the money - its a grand bit of technology, and there is nothing out there to beat it yet

The fan on my box seems very noisy and could be on for long peirods of time. I have had a few failed recordings as well.

I got sky+ at Christmas and for the most part I am very happy with it. The only problem is it causes a snowy picture RTE1 and NET2 on my terrestrial set up. I got a unit of the dealer which was put around the mains lead and it improved signal slightly but it is still anoying. Has anyone else had this problem.

P.S. This is only my second post in about 3 years but I check in regularily. All the posts have provided me and my friends with very useful information and I would like to thank the people who post and the organisers of these satellite threads for doing a great job.

This type of interference may be caused by the LED light on a mains power unit . Try moving the coax lead that connects to the tv and see if it affects the "snow" , if there is a change you could either change the coax to better shielded CT100 cable or change or move the mains extension lead.

    Hope this helps
