I wish blue screens were prettier

Yes, odd subject i know. Anyways i seem to be getting so many of them lately that i wish they could be pretier. Pink Screen Of Death Anyone? Anyways, for some reason i've been getting alot of blue screens and errors on my system and stuff lately. I'm convinced it's a hardware problem as i tried reinstalling windows and got blue screens during the feckin installation for christ sake! Seems to have calmed down a bit now tho, but i do still get the occasionaly one when i do something like close a window say.. or something like that. I thought it was bad ram and replaced the module, which seemed to fix the problem for a day or two, untill the problems returned. Can't be the motherboard cus it's only about 3 months old. Not the hard drive because i tried a different one in it, same story. I'm stumped, i dunno what's going on. Here is one of the two screens i seem to be getting lately. The other one spouts something about a page fault in a non paged area. This is saying... well, you'll see. Any ideas? I have half a mind to bin the system and built a new one, but money doesn't grow on trees. Paper does kinda... but not money unfortunatly.

you can change the colour of your "insert colour" screen of death :). Have you tried a minimalist boot? Unplug everything you don't need and try to install then, if you're still getting errors (if you can) try different ram. If you don't have problems with extra drives/soundcards/other unplugged , try adding them one at a time and see if any cause problems. judging by a quick google on win32k.sys error try updating yoru service pack as soon as possable. It may be a problem with your graphics card as i've seen that people have mentioned disabeling hardware acceleration seems to fix the problem. Saying that, make sure your have dx9 and the latest windows updates.

Hrm the gfx card thing sounds plausible, however it worked fine before, dont see why it shouldnt now. Also, disabelling hardware acceleration, wouldn't that slow down the card? Windows the installation i did itself is perfect it's just these bloody errors. And how do i change the bastard screen of death colour? :)

Hotfix available from Microsoft. If your running XP.

You may need to contact them to get it tho'.

Also, i see some people have had issues with Nvidia drivers and reloading them helped.

Here is a giant thread on the subject.

Did you format the HD when you installed the new mobo?
If not, does the new mobo use the same chipset as the old one? If it's a different chipset (Via/Intel/SiS/Nvidia) then you really need to format, install XP, then install the new chipset drivers.

Format, then reinstall XP yea? Fat chance, i have too much data on this drive to loose. Besides when i got the new mobo i just had to install the drivers for that and away i go. Anyways this is the only mobo the install has ever known, i only installed xp like a few days ago, well this particular install anyways.

    *Snip*

Just ran a memtest at per that other discussion on that other board... no errors came up. I do however remember a few weeks ago setting the ram setting in the bios from automatic to 266mhz, which is the speed of my ram anyways. I've now set it back to automatic to see what happens. So far so good but i could be speaking too soon.

sounds like a dodgey disk or ram.
Try removing one of the sticks if you've got 2 or more.

I've been getting bluescreens like this with Windows XP and my IC7-G. It's a pain in the backside running this 2.6C at default speed, as it can do over 3GHz on air (bog standard fan).

If the problem is what it seems to be, it looks like I'll be getting new RAM :)

hmm that's sounds like a similar problem i had some time back, can't remember the exact error message i was getting on my blue screens.

i was getting these intermitant BSOD's and with 4 hdd's in my machine i often found that when i booted up i might loose 1 or 2 then they might come back after another boot and this drove me mental, for ages was convinced it was 1 hdd in particular that was causing the problems, when i unplugged it the problem seems to almost dissapear only 1 BSOD in the space of a month.

I tried reformatting but that did'nt help and in the end i tried a low level format (bad idea i know) and ended up screwing the hdd up coz i got a BSOD during the low level format LoL. Anyways bought a new hdd following that and for a week or two things seemed fine then bang, BSOD's and failing hdd's :-\ some people suggested it might be faulty RAM and others said hdd's but in the end i figured it out.

My particular problem was my psu. originally my athlon 800 machine came with a 350w psu which i had upgraded to a 450w after upgrading cpu and installing a hdd or two and some fans, but at the time of the problems the 450w psu was trying to run, a dvd drive, cd-rw drive, 4 hdd's all with hdd coolers, sound, graphics, nic, dvd decoder and firewire cards, a 120mm window fan, cold cathode light and about 5 case fans and along with a pci card cooler thrown in for good measure.

So anyway to cut a long story a little bit shorter, i slapped in a 550w psu into my machine and it now happily runs with everything connected up and no a single BSOD since i upgraded a good 7-8 months ago :)

i also have a friend who was getting similar intermitant BSOD's and again he too cured it by upgrading psu to a 550w but he did'nt have nearly as much inside his machine as i did, never the less he got it sorted and to my knowledge has been working away fine since.

so in closing, for anyone still awake and reading this far down, it might not be any harm to check your psu, if your still running on a 300 or 350w i would suggest trying a higher psu at some point and see if it helps. well that's my 2c worth :)

didnt read whole tread so this might have been mentioned already

i was getting lost of them blue screens when i had my cpu overclocked, everything is fine now overclocking it a little less or better even keeping it stock prob wont give any prob. thats if you have the pc overclocked of course

    hope you get it sorted

I sorted it a while ago actually. What it was, was that my ram was being erm, 'overclocked' in the bios. All i had done was set it to the stock frequency in the bios but that seemed to feck it up somehow. I remembered that i had done it and set the option back to auto and that seems to have fixed it, weird no?

hmm not really i get BSOD from windows with certain overclocked situations that aren't stable, if your bios was overclocking your ram to turbo for example giving it timings it can't handle i presume windows crashes out. i also find pifast is handy for checking out memory errors also, it had a tendancy to fail for me if my ram wasn't happy.
