Uncompressed AVI Files...

For some reason they wont play on my system. Every single programme tells me i havn't got the proper codec installed and that it wont play. Which is weird because a codec is something you use to compress avi already, therefore, uncompressed avi shouldnt need one right? I dunno either this doesn't make sense to me, maybe you one you geniouseseses (yea butter them up...) can work it out, thanks.

If you don't want to bother with codecs , try downloading a freeware video player called VideoLan , just google it to get to its site . This player will play pretty much anything you throw at it.

For pizza's sake chucky... it's nothing to do with software. I've known about videoland for quite a while now and have used it in the past, but when i tried to get it to open the uncompressed avi file it didn't play it either.... cus something (i dunno what) is missing from the computer so that it doesn't know what an uncompressed avi is. Anyways even if i were able to play them in videoland, i'd still need to be able to open them in my editing programes because i'm in the middle of making another short movie for a game i like and i need the uncompressed avi files to be able to be read by other programmes, which they arent doing at the moment.

get Virtualdubmod and open the file in it. See if it'll either play or compress in there

What OS are you using? If you have windows 9x, and the avi is over 2 gigs, i think it won't work.

it's windows xp. it's in ntfs too so i dont have the 4 gig file size limit of fat32. i could convert the files afterwards but that's too painstacking, as i do need to kinda play the thing afterwards to see if i like it, then if not i just delete it.

you donl;t have to convert it, but use Virtualdubmod to see if the thing will play or not.

u could try a code called ffdshow, i works on the pc's own direct show filters in direct x, plays sutitles, and more often than not improves playback quality, go to the tools section of www.dvdrhelp.com

At the risk of pointing out the obvious, do you have DivX ?

Ohh sweet mother in hell i dunno why i bother. Yes i have divx, which is a CODEC, ie COMPRESSED avi.... not UNCOMPRESSED avi. It's uncompressed avi that i cant play, all other compressed avi files work, i've stated that already.

now dont eat the head off me, but i know your saying its uncompressed, but it still needs a codec from which it was exported. What programme did u export from? I Recently did an UNcompressed avi straight from avid, and i had the same problem as the Avid AVI Uncompressed codec is not standard on a lot of machines, therefore it would not play. If it is avid you are exporting from try in the codec options setting it to Cinepak codec for uncompressed video, this worked for me

Just out of interest, have you even tried opening the thing in virtualdubmod? If you have, then if it was a codec problem (which i find likely...) then it would have shown you what codec was needed. And if it was a corrupt video problem, it would also have shown you that...

But it looks like you havn't even tried that yet. Hell, here's a clicky linky for the download. Let me know what happens.

I've used virtual dub before on my other video projects. Anyways here's the error i got from virtual dub mod.

(btw, didn't mean to sound like such a cock but i was annoyed at the unhelpfullnessness of that one)

ah its grand, only takin the mick! What was the programme u used to create the avi in the first place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,258 ✭✭✭MrVestek

Ahh due to that error i've managed to solve my own problem... thanks guys. By the way if u wanna see one of my sonic vs streets of rage vids, head over to the emulation forum. I'll keep you guys updated on any other projects that i do.

Glad to see you got it sorted.

What probably happened is that the program you used to export the avi has a built in codec, that isn't accessible by other programs. Thats why nothing could open it, and the codec is named in Virtualdubmod for ya.

I got stung with that one before when video editing. An djust for the record, even if an avi is uncompressed, it still needs a codec to decompress it.

Ape, flac and WMA are all losslessly encoded music formats (WMA is primarily a compressed format, but has the lossless option), so each contains the exact same data, but you need a different codec to decode each one...

Ahh, understand this i am now, yes? Heh anyways it was fraps. I could run it from the folder no problem, but i just simply had to install it cus i never noticed that it popped a codec into the windows install. On a side note, how can i get fraps to capture smoothly? I mean i've captured at the minimum 640x480 (in game) with all the graphics settings set to ****e. Yes it's still not smooth, any ideas?

    System Specs:
    Operating System: (WinXP Professional 5.1 Service Pack 1 (Build #2600)) * Uptime: (1h 30m 54s) * Record: (5h 39m 57s set on Tue Mar 16 15:20:19 2004)

Save the FRAPS output to a physically seperate drive than your Windows/games drive if possible. Also try lowering the FPS capture rate

The problem is not the quality of the gaming graphics, but its the speed of your hardrives. If you try and capture 1024x768 at high quality, its not going to be limited by CPU (much), its going to be limited by harddrive speed, and if FRAPS is writing to your harddrive a lot, access times for your game will increase, and therefore the game will be choppy.

It probably would have been an idea to mention you were using Fraps in the first place :)
