PRSI class for work experience?

    Hi -

Hope this is the right board for this.
I was made redundant at xmas, and I went to claim my unemployment benefit. I worked in my job - my first PRSI-paying job - for 18 months. It seems UB kicks in at 2 years in a job. I was in college prior to this, and so qualify for pre-tax credits, which should qualify me for UB.
The thing that's screwing me up is I worked for 5 weeks on work experience in my job - a college requirement - during the easter term, then went back to college to finish up for 4 weeks, then they offered me the full-time job, where I stayed for 18 months. While I was there on work experience they were giving me like €150 a week pocket money. I thought this was great, until I went to apply for UB. It seems I was on class M PRSI during these 5 weeks, and the welfare are making a big deal about this. It seems I should've been on Class A. There is a investigation pending, and it could take months! I've been broke for 10 weeks now, it could be months more.
Has anyone else ever been on work experience where they got a little money, and, if so, what class PRSI were you paying? Or, if any employers are reading, what do you do about work experience students you give a little money to?
    Any help welcome,
    Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your trouble.

You should be getting class A all the time. Class M is for persons under 16, pensioners and relatives of employers.
The employer needs to be given a good hiding. The revenue will surely do this.

If you are skint, go to the health board and speak to your local community welfare officer. He/she will pay you supplementry welfare allowance till your situation is resolved by revenue/social welfare.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for that, Bond.
My ropey old company just sent me a mail:
"Class M is because you were covered by college insurance while you were
    on work experience."
Which appears to be ill-informed rubbish.
Am I being naive, but why couldn't they just call the revenue, say, "Oops, we made a misktake" and write a check for the right amount of PRSI? It's only 2 years ago they screwed up.

what your company just told you is total Bull Sh*t. There is a special class J for FAS schemes and everything else is class A.

Are they going to pay the correct class?

As for just paying up, the company will be fined and will be audited to see if you are not the only one they have done this to.

I hope that you get justice soon.
