there should be a setting "search for other boot devices" or something similar. set this to yes

Still no joy seems I need "dos USB drivers" for my external drive but tried a few and cant seem to get these boot discs to work. USB 2 boot devices appear to be a bit thin on the ground. There is a utility on the Dell web site for USB Key fobs that works but the capacity is to small
Just have to get the old screwdriver out.

Had this problem recently here is how:

    1. Go to www.bootdisk.com get usb dos boot disk (costs 3 euro tru paypal), get OEM WIN 98 boot disk Must be 1st version cant be SE (one of there links for oem points to SE use 2nd link ).
Then edit the CONFIG and AUTOEXEC files to use the USB drivers it must be edited perfectly with full names of USB drivers.
Copy the edited CONFIG and AUTOEXEC files to the WIN 98 Boot disk( MUST BE 1ST version NOT SE ) add in the 2 USB DOS drivers then start pc.

Find it extremley complicated cos they left out 1 minor detail which matters a lot :)

    2. make the bootdisk and add these 4 files to it as is i have edited autoexec and config to use the drivers inc (i bought them off bootdisk) in the dos usb drivers pack are 5 different files i got lucky with 1st 2 and it worked fine.

This really annoyed me and lack of help on net was amazing but i have it sorted now any qs just ask :)

EDIT have edited this post a lot hope it makes sense does to me, but i got no anti virus so scan these files, its a new install over USB havent had time to install anything really.
4 files are AUTOEXEC CONFIG.SYS and USB ASPI1 and USBCD1
