We could have around 4% of houses ready or semi-ready for fibre to the home at minimal extra cost if our Minister for the Environment had acted on sound advice he got two years ago. ComWreck's John asks Dermot to talk sense into his colleague Cullen (- because Martin did not listen to Muck's advice). More

That report was compiled by an Inter Departmental committee of Civil Servants. It is an excellent piece of advice for the so called policy makers.....like the hapless Cullen . It also cost feck all, the expertise was in already in place and free to the Government.

Cullen did nothing about the ducting issue either:

    a) Through the Planning Regulations ....specifying carrier neutral ducting installation in new developments , be they office , commercial or housing.

    or

    b) Through the Building Regulations, specifying carrier neutral ducting within apartment and office blocks .

Cullen has been a complete failure .

    Phew,

My house (5 years old) has a duct running from the path outside to somewhere under the floor boards. Outside there is ducting in the estate belonging to eircom and ducting right back to the exchange. It's a start though.

rant - This exchange has 3,500 people off it and will have 5k in 2 years. It is not included in the DCMNR's 88 towns of over 1500 people and it is not in eircom's DSL upgrade program for towns that the DCMNR left out. I think it may have an unrealistic trigger level though
