    Hey guys,

Im looking for a favour. I want to download Mandrake 9.2 but im only on a dial-up connection. I was wondering if someone here with a broadband connection would be so kind as to download Mandrake 9.2 from here..http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=29
    and send it to me.

It is three discs and I'd really appreciate it as it would save me over 500 hours trying to download the three discs at 3KB/s.

    Thanks,
    Denis

Someone on the list will already have the ISO's and will burn it for you. Quite a few are on Boards too.

Version 10 is out now i think, with kernel 2.6.3 and KDE 3.2

Why dont you get Mandrake 10.0?, it come with the 2.6 kernel by defualt.

when i was installing mandrake 10 it advised me not to install kernel 2.6 saying that there would be compatibility issues

Mandrake 10 should work absolutely fine with 2.6 - No doubt they're just warning users as they're not as confident of low bug levels with 2.6 in a point zero release. Your desktop user experience should be better too as 2.6 supports a pre-emptive kernel which means that you can make it more responsive for foreground GUI applications (which I'm sure Mandrake have compiled into their kernels).

You are probably better off with 10 in any event.

i guess mandrake is trying to have a go at Mac's going from 9.2 > 10. Exact same way that macs went

The LSB compatibility tests wont run on 2.6, so you can either deselect the LSB package(s?), or run a 2.4 kernel.

I've found MDK 10 to be an absolute pig - bugged to hell. Its completely unusable on this machine. 9.2 works fine.

Some bugs for you ;) :

One incredibly annoying bug: when I try to launch a program in KDE, nothing happens until I go to KDE SYS guard, find the process, and click kill. I get a dialog box asking if I want to kill the process, and then I get some progress in the original app. I then dismiss the dialog from SYS guard

Scannerdrake suddenly can't find my Canoscan N670U (worked in 9.2)

My HP Deskjet 940C USB printer refuses to work (worked in 9.2).

You should really have posted this in the file sharing forum . If you haven't found someone to do this yet, I have 9.2 and 10 Community here (but read my post above about 10).

Got the same problem with a HP printer/scanner, it was recognised automatically in 9.1 and 10 thinks it's a webcam. Go figure. There's also the incredibly annoying and utterly confusing thing with the ide-scsi emulation.

It's basically been removed in the 2.6 kernel as it's not needed, with direct ATAPI support now standard.
But... every single linux burning application I can find uses cdrecord, which needs ide-scsi emulation to work properly, and whose development has been discontinued.

    Grr.

On a positive note, my long and painful tv-out saga has taken a turn for the better. It's now possible to boot with the radeon driver and the svideo cable attached, though tv-out is not supported with this driver. Just needs a quick X-reset to switch from one display config to the other though.
