2 computers = 1 modem

Ok ill try to explain this best as i can and see if you can help me any as im really at the end of my tether here..

Im currently back in scotland visiting the folks and my dad asked me if i could get the cable modem to work with the computer down stairs (my mums one..), asked around and someone told me to get a crossover cable as there are a few network cards sitting around here..

So off i go and pick up some crossover cable, racked up both sides to go into each other and started up the "set up networking" feature of xp on both computers (ive done this enough times tonight to throw myself into a spasm..)

Now the computers are technically networked together as ive printed from downstairs to the upstair printer and i also got gfx drivers out of the shared folder

BUT i need the internet to work downstairs to fulfill my tasks here and ive tried so many things over the past couple of hours, from giving the comp a static ip address to running through the setup wizard god knows how many times now. Ive set up the host of the ICS computer to "share the internet connection" and ive set up the client to use the gateway provided, but nothing seems to happen atall on the client computer regarding getting internet..

Im wondering what i can do now as i would like to get this done as, well im bored, slept in and no doubt will be up a fair bit longer.. ive used all the ideas i can think of apart from physically swapping round some network cards on the upstair computer (already done it on the downstair one..) but if it is able to connect to each other then surely there shouldnt be a problem atall.

The cable modem goes into a NIC card, and the crossover cable is coming out of the host computers onboard NIC to a NIC card in the downstairs computer. Does the crossover cable has to be a certain way as thats about the only thing ive not tried?
I WILL get this done tonight if it kills me but now im really just needing help with it

    help ? :)

so, on the host do you have 2 NIC cards, one connected to the cable modem and the other to the client, or is the cable modem connected via usb?

the cable modem is plugged into a ethernet card

i then have the crossover cable running from the ethernet card built into the mobo going to a ethernet card on the comp downstairs

when you open the internet gateway what happens?
does is look to connect to the other pc?

according to your pics is the cable modem on the realtek card or on the sis?

    pic1.jpg

I have ICS running here but with ordinary dial-up. should be pretty much the same setup though. me thinks.

the cable modem is on the realtek card, it appears to try and look to connect to the other pc, but im not entirely sure

i slapped in another nic card just incase it was the onboard ethernet adapter that was causing the problems but still seem to have the same results

    ok interesting one.
so you've two nics on the host. two different ips? is the cable modem ip static?
The orientation of the crossover cable won't matter. When you setup the internet connection sharing wizard is there an option for which nic?
Can you ping the nic that is supposed to be the gateway?
Bridging the two nics on the host might help - as far as I know it will create one ip address.

two different ip's yeh, the cable modem is a static ip address..

if i bridge the connections it loses internet connectivity as the cable modem is only allowed one network address to connect to the net (the cable company only allows one if i remember correctly)

i finally managed to get it working about 10 minutes ago, i disabled zonealarm on both computers, disabled all internet connection sharing and put a static ip address on the nic card connecting it to downstairs, ran the network wizard on both computers and heh presto IT WORKED!?

no idea how it worked this time but jesus thank god it did as i was tearing my hair out :)

thanks for all the help anyway, tis appreciated folks

on another note though, when i tryed to delete the bridge connection my computer switched itself off and now im left with a bridge connection that i cannot delete as it just says "error" when i try to do it

both nics arent connected to this bridge as when i done it it obviously released them for it but left me with a bridge that im unable to delete (if that makes sense?)

it told me to run system restore if i wanted to delete it as it was uncapable of doing so, but system restore is disabled on this computer plus the fact im not going through the nightmare of setting this all up again..

just leave it you think? dosent seem to be doing any damage regardless, just that it shows up on taskbar as "network connection is disconnected"

if it anin't broke don't fix it :D

    your problem was the firewall.
you have to setup the firewall to let the LAN connect through the SIS to the cablemodem.

as for the bridge have you tryed bridgeing them again and then deleting the brigde?
