Was trying to download some stuff, just using a dial up connection.

the little connection properties box shows data being transferred at around the 4k per second usual, but yet the download speed of the program i was downloading was only about 1k or under a second.

How can i find out where all the other data is going - what program is using it, or whats going on?

I've run up to date Norton and Adaware, there doesn't seem to be anything funny there....

is it possible that the program you are using is running from a remote server? (stupid as it sounds with 56k)

Otherwise, you may have some processes running in the background :o

You can try a setting in your modem properties (its been 4 years since ive had 56k so i cant really remember). Theres a setting which is usually set at simthing like 1000, but its ment to be around 5000. I helped someone with tech support with the same problem back in the day - i just cant remember what the setting is and i cant look at it first hand coz im on cable.

Hope you can find what im talkin about - vague as it sounds :p

    start > run > netstat -a

to see whats connecting to what,

Get TCPVIEW for a more advanced netstat, and even NETLIMITER to control it
