radeon 9000 problem

I've got a problem with performance with a graphics card I installed.

I had a 64MB Geforce 4 card in my comp which I swapped for a 128MB saphire radeon 9000 assuming the radeon was the better card.

Now for some reason my performace has dropped.

    I have:

    athlon xp 2800+
    1.5 GB RAM

Gamew which I played before on the Geforce are running at lower framerates now.

The recent painkiller demo slows to a crawl with loewst settings whilst a friend with the Geforce can run full detail at full speed.

I've tried all the various drivers around and also some unoffical ATI drivers all to no avail.

Is the Geforce simply a better card?

Any tips or links? It's starting to annoy me

    Thanks

It really depends on the Geforce 4 you were using - the Ti4200 4400 4600 and 4800 would all, as far as I'm aware, beat the ATI9000 on frame rates, benchmarking etc regardless of how much memory is on the card...

The only Geforce 4 card that the 9000 is better than is the MX420/440

It also depends on the type of 9000 you got - is it a pro (don;t even know if 9000 pro exists tbh) or SE or what?

Check out this link for some comparisons on benchmarking

    http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030714/vga_card_guide-12.html

You relly need a 9500, 9600 or 9700 (preferably pro version) to bea any of the GF4 Ti series...

    Don't hang back - get the 9800 pro - its the daddy!! I went from 50FPS to 200FPS and I'd been using a FX5600 with 256MB!!!

a geforce 4 ti would be a better performer, a geforce 4 mx a worse performer. which model are you/your mate using?

could be due to the ati card not disabling antialiasing... (which i can't find a way around... soz:rolleyes: )

Yea basicly that wasent much of an upgrade, im sorry to say.

Hope you didnt pay too much for it. mx440 isint that far behind the 9000, like the guys say hte Ti series are far far better cards with much better performance.

    9600pro should be a minimum upgrade (€120 ish) , top would be a 9800pro (€210 ish).

its a common mistake for people to think a card is better because it has more memory
realy the most important thing once the card has enough memory to load all textures in a game is the core and memory speed

The Geforce was a MX440 and the Radeon wasn't a Pro version.

Thankfully I just took the card from my brothers comp so no money changed hands.

My friend must have a Ti card then. He wasn't sure when I asked him.

I prefered the Geforce which dounds stupid. Always seemed I had more control over it.

If ( when :) ) I get a radeon 9800 is the 256MB worth the extra money over the 128MB one?

    Thanks for the replys

Basicly i dont think its worth the extra. The 128mb version should perform the exact same .

Performance is based on the speed of the GPU and Ram as apposed to the ammount you have. The cheapest ive seen 9800pro's for is €209 on www.jes-computer.de - would be a pitty to spend more when you dont have to :) .

The Mx440 prob performs the same (if not a little better) than the 9000 . Both cards have there stronger points but its reasonably level overall. 9000pro beats the Mx440.

I wouldn't bother with the 256MB 9800XT... its silightly higher but I reckon investigating some overclocking tricks might get you close enough on a 9800 without forking out the extra's..

Plus, there are likely to be newer better crds released in the next 6 months so forking out the guts of €400 on a 256mb seems a bit mad...
