Hey, im on ntl cable almost 2 years and decided i wanted a new modem, my current one is a terajet tj210, theres not much support for cable in ireland so im probably gonna have to order abroad. Before i go ordering from the UK or something i just wanted to clear this up with relation to komplett.ie

    3Com OfficeConnect CableDSL Gateway 3C857-ME, with 4-port 10/100 switch

Could that be used as a standalone cable modem, and just split the connection four ways? or does my original modem have to be in the mix somewhere?

    Cheers,
    Niall

clear it with ntl before you buy anything. they may not register a non-ntl cable modem mac address for you

So your saying that it definetly is compatible, but just to clear it with ntl first?

i don't know about anything about the router, but i'd doubt the thing comes with both cable and dsl modems built in... unless it's unusually expensive!

I could be wrong here but i dont think those routers have a modem in them, you are supposed to attatch the modem to it via an ethernet cable.

From the pics of your modem that google found for me, it has an ethernet connection. You'd plug the router straight into this. A "Broadband gateway" is just a router without a modem. Any of the these on Komplett should do. If you want to ditch your current modem and get a built in one then you'd have to shop abroad alright.

Is a standalone router not a modem/router combo

but could be used with your exisiting modem

as regards ntl when changing modems you just ring them and give them the new MAC address of the modem

Just clone the original MAC address......

of a cable modem? How so?

I thought a mac address was written into a chipset for ID purposes. When i called NTL about my modem a few years ago, they lock your ip to that mac ID. IF you wanna change machines you have to turn the modem off for an hour i think, which clears the macID for another machine to use.

AFAIK its not possible to clone a cable modems mac id - then again i may be totally wrong.

Got details from an article on the Register a while back- will try to dig it out.
It involved a tool called uConfig- and yes, it did involve rewriting the eprom.
Will see if I can find it again

God no, just unplug the power cable and plug it back in. Will work with different hardware immediately :)

Some routers allow you to configure them with a fake mac address to get around problems such as this.
