Render me useless

When I'm rendering video what determines the speed of the render? Is it down to amount of RAM, speed of CPU, hard drive speed, video card or a combination?

Also I'd be interested to know exactly what spec home computer you'd need to render say a 30 minute FX intensive video in just a few minutes. At the moment it would take me about 10 hours.

I'm presuming whatever hardware I need to be able to render at such speeds would cost me thousands. Are there any cost effective options?

It's a combination...... CPU ram and graphics.

I have a 3Ghz, 1 gig ram and a video card designed especially for the software I have. All effects are real time apart from speed controls.

Yeah I've 1gig RAM, a 2 Ghz and a pinnacle studio 9 av/dv and everything is zippy apart from speed controls. So I guess I'm really talking about speed controls...

What spec can crunch speed controls fast? Is there a particular video card that can do it?

If youve got an 02 running irix then that would speed it up a little :)

Depending on what it is exactly you are rendering, nothing will speed it up for you bar switching to some very expenive composition software/hardware
