Importance of heroes in life

    Hi,

I am in writing an article in which I am attempting to convince people of the meaning and importance of heroes in life. The idea came to me after reading WB Yeats' poem in September 1913, as he spoke about the heroes who were dead and gone and in their place were the greedy middle classes.

I am wondering what are peoples opinions on the topic.

I have written on this topic before and it is a wonderful topic indeed. I am not going to comment on it right now though for fear that I would be writing your paper for you ;)

I think for someone to delve into it themselves is a great adventure...there are so many people in your life and in our history that can be our "heroes in life" you really have an endless source of information for this topic, you can take it to so many different levels!

I'd be interested to see what you have written so far, Please indulge us ;)

Heroes is the essay topic that me through the leaving cert!!
As opposed to writing simply abouts musical geniuses and sports stars and their influences, I refered to the unsung heroes of this world, ie Special olympics and cancer survivors.

Well, what im going to do is examine the importance of historical heroes, such as Abraham Lincoln, and also mention some fictional characters in books and movies who were heroes and their importance such as Frodo Baggins in the Lord of the rings.

After explaining their importance in their context i will talk about how heroes are needed in our time.

I havn't begain writing on it yet though. Id like other peoples ideas and opinions before I begin.

So BEAT, please make some comments, they would really help!

Good idea Bill! Never thought of Special olympcs and cancer survivors as heroes. That will really touch the heart of the reader!
BTW, what make did you get in English?

Wuthering Heights, sweet jesus I didn't like that book.

Decent storyline but MY LORD the amount of times the narrative bounced around between characters, I found it quite ridiculous.

You got an A2 and are struggling with that book! That is unbelievable. We are doing that book now for the Leaving and there is no difficulty with it.

I think you have something there...you could pick a few historical figures and write about thier importance and influence as real life heroes then compare them to some fictional characters who were portrayed as heroes. then ask something like, why do we feel the need to create heroes? because of thier importance and lack thereof in todays world ;) that's all I am giving ya hun...its really an easy assignment tbh.
goodluck, let us know how it turns out! :)

I'm a bit sceptical about heroes, if they are idolised and if all their faults and waeknesses are left out. I'm also not keen on ppl who have one hero whom they admire unquestioningly. I prefer to think that there are a lot of ppl who have done great things despite their faults and that something can be learned from each of them.

HUUUUUGE difference between doing something for the leaving and doing it in college.

ie: two school years spent on Hamlet, two lectures in college on hamlet.

You could look at different periods in history and the corresponding way in which heros are portrayed in literature of that time. Ancient Greeks, Normans, Victorians all had very different ideas of what it was to be a hero and their literature reflects this.

There were different things considered to be valuable qualities at different times. Looks, stength, moral values, wealth.

Also the idea of the female hero (as opposed to the heroine) has changed a lot.

    Just my ramblings.

I think heros or idols are essential. People are impressionable.

You could consider how people these days consider Popstars/actors as their heros and try to emulate them. How things have changed from the past when people would have been honoured.
