Help with Opera plugins

I cannot get Opera to recognise java and flash plugins. I've tried adding paths to all the plugin directories I know - opera itself, mozilla, netscape, in my home directory ./netscape dirs etc. but Opera won't pick them up.
I ran the flashinstaller from macromedia's page and indicated the opera bin directory, libflashreader.so is in there, but opera still doesn't see it.
    What am I doing wrong?
Same thing for java, I have the plugin directory pointing at /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_01/plugin/i386/ns4/ but it's not recognised.
