Has anyone heard whether this is good or bad yet? Are there any rumours in advance of it being released in April?

I know none of the original cast are back, and its being made by effects heavy Phill Tippet (his first directorial outing)... but still I loved the first one and am tempted to check this out.

AFAIK its only a direct-to-DVD/VIDEO release, not a cinema setup. Any thoughts?

If it was going to be any good, it would be a cinema release.
Or at least an HBO movie or something. In fairness, if they cant even get back some of the B-movie actors who starred in the first one there must be something seriously wrong with it.
Muck I suspect, but I hope I'm wrong.

The first was only good because of how bad the acting was (and those aliens seriously kicked a*se). Safe to assume this will be a pile of crud, but, alas, could be worth watching (if just to laugh at, again).

I hope its like the first one. It ROCKED, it was ment to be a p!ss take of a propaganda film , thats why the acting was purposly bad.

By the way, cool sig. I love that line.

A review of this has appeared on AICN. Not as good as the original, but still sounds interesting....

Hmmm where to start for this one.

If you like the over the top style of the first movie expect to be disapointed. This is a totaly different kind of movie. It takes it's self far more serious and lose's alot of the fun the first movie held.

Imagine a cross between Pitch Black (will explain below) and the first movie. The budget is low on this, very low in fact. While there are plenty of bugs in it, there mainly the warrior type and the start of the movie is random clips from the first film re-edited.

Also as a result of the low budget the whole story take's place on a dark/always night type planet to cut down on cost's! I read but cant confirm the movie was made by the people who did the effects for the first film.

Hard to really sum this one up as its more like a pilot for a tv show that a movie.

Yeah the guy that was responsiable for the effects in the first one is directing it. I think it could turn out okay, though I'd say it will be lacking Verhoven's trademark pisstake of American society.

There is no taking of the piss in this movie, it plays it straight as a sci fi action/war movie.

play.com has it down as being released on dvd in 24 days, so i seriously doubt it'll get shown in any cinemas.

i might just get the box set http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=160912&p=57&c=&g=72
its only a few quid more than the second film on its own...

Does the budget stetch to include communal shower scenes??

Or maybe they had to film that in the dark too... :)

As a possible future concerned parent I always make sure to check the violence/sex/nudity content on my films. "Awww, is that all?".

It wasn't even shown in the theaters :(

    it gets very little attention

I haven't seen the movie myself but judging from the first one it must be great!

Yea read somewhere it was always intended to be a straight-to-video. Much smaller budget this time round, although the effects are meant to be on par with the first one. Unfortunately it appears its also lost all of the ironic commentary of the first film, the thing that made it so great in the first place.
