I am using a winbook FX with a hard drive that wont fdisk. I am fdisking it in preparation to install windows 98.

In fact, fdisk wont run at all...

When I attempt to run it, I get the following error:

    C:\>fdisk

Your program has caused a divide overflow error.
If the problem persists, contact your program vendor.

What, if anything can I do to get the drive to fdisk? I booted from the windows 98 CD and dropped to the c: prompt to run fdisk. I also get this same error when trying to run it from the virtual drive with fdisk c: switch.

Someone? Anyone? Please help me get this ancient laptop running again :(

    Thanks in advance,

    -SpaceCowboy42

    Thanks again...:ninja:

Ah, my bad, im sorry I forgot to mention, that the laptop has no floppy...

Or, it did, until the heads ripped on it. Useless now.

    Any other workaround? :(

How are you going to install win98?

    Has it got a CD-ROM?

yes, it has a cd rom drive, its a 'swappable' cd rom and floppy configuration, the floppy is just busted as all hell :P

I should also include that I have tried this on two different hard drives and neither would fdisk, BUT it seems to be a problem with fdisk running in the first place, it doesnt even get started so I dont think that its a problem with the drive itself (which reads find in DOS)

ANOTHER thought, that perhaps fdisk isnt running normally because its trying to run entirely from memory... perhaps the floppy thing would fix it because then it would have something to write to while it works, but again... no floppy drive... Im thinking that there has to be a workaround for this!

Yeah, boot from the CD-ROM. Choose "Start Windows 98 with CD-ROM Support".

The usual functions should be available.

Amoi, are you running fdisk for the purpose of dividing up your HDD or just to format it? If it's the latter, you could just try run format.

Yes, when I boot from the CD and try to run setup it says there is a previous partition and that it cant install, thus the use of FDISK.

I will try that ultimate boot thing when I get home and see how it works..

    much thanks so far guys...

If you have a Win XP install disk, then create yourself a BartPE boot disk. You can then use DiskPart which seems to be the next generation of Fdisk.

Just Google for BartPE and check Microsoft for details of DiskPart.
