Broadband gaming question

    Hi,

I just got NTL's 600k broadband installed, mainly for games. we already hae 2 PC's in the house networked-with a crossover cable. I'm planning to get a Netgear WGR614 router soon, and have a few questions:

1/Does the connection speed slow if playing an internet game(call of duty the usual culprit) on both PC's simultaniousy on the same broadband line?

2/Is the modem NTL provided me what limits my speed to 600k? if i got a modem capable of 1Mb, would this improve the connection speed?

3/my own PC is a dell Inspiron 8600, it came with a Dell TrueMobile 1400 Dual Band WLAN Mini-PCI Card, would this be stable enough for playing broadband games using 802.11b/802.11g or am I better off sticking to an ethernet cable?

help or suggestions with any of the above would be gratefully appreciated,

    Thanks,

    G

    1. 2 pc's will be able to play over that connection no problem

    2. im not sure but it would be illegal to get 1 mbit with out paying for it,stealing bandwidth is theft

    3. internet shared over a wireless network is fast enough for games, no real noticeable differnce over a wired network

no problem i forgot to say you will probably need 2 copies of call of duty to play on the 2 pc's at the sametime thats the way it is with most games

You can get the 1MB service for just €10 per month extra.....SHAMELESS PIMPING - OMG I'M SO ASHAMED :) that would also double your upload speed to 256k ( 1024 down , 256 up )

I really really wouldnt recommend trying to steal it.

I would agree with tuxx on the other answers.

    Guess what,
I’m having probs running call of duty on the two PCs simultaneously on an internet game, Through the NTL600k cable modem, and Netgear WRG614v2 router. I got this explanation from the NTL website FAQ’s:

“Will I be able to use the service with all PCs connected to my home local LAN?

The cable modem system will only allocate 1 IP address to a PC. If you wish to connect a LAN then some kind of Network Address Translation will be required. This will involve two network cards in the PC connected to the cable modem and software to do this. (Linux and Windows both have free software to do this). Please note that ntl do not support this multi-computers environment.

Alternatively, you may choose to have more than one cable modem installed. These will be charged individually. “

When I signed up, they told me I would have no hassle as long as I used a router.
Both players can play on different servers at the same time, but as soon as we join the same game, the ping goes up, and “connection interrupted” appears, and the game becomes unplayable. maybe the above IP address problem?
I have also tried to connect pc#1 directly to the NTL modem, also wirelessly to pc#2 via the router, and set pc#2 to connect to the net through pc#1(using the set up a home
Network wizard-Both Pc’s are running XP pro). We have only one copy of the game tried so far, didn’t get a chance to get another yet-maybe I’m wrong, but I doubt its what wrong here
Is there any way around this or do I have to pay an extra €40 per month for a 2nd
Connection? - Or can I set up some kind of virtual IP address?

Help or suggestions with any of the above would be gratefully appreciated,(again!)
As this is doing my head in, and I doubt NTL are going to be much help.

    Thanks,
