    folks

im a bit lost with all these different types of aerials and whatnot.

i saw a cheapo aerial going for 20 euros, its a wideband uhf one. if i lob that onto my garage roof could i get the uk terristrial channels?

    thanks for the help!

    :)
ps: sadly in this day and age, we are receiving the grand total of about 3 channels in kerry! mum not too keen on satellite dishes. tg4 and tv3 are not great, we only got the single hhf/vhf? aerial.

This would be better off in the terrestrial forum, but for the time being here you go.

I would be very surprised if you would be able to pick up any of the UK channels through an aerial. Your area would have to be served by a retransmitter. I am not sure if there are any in the Kingdom. If you let us know specifically what part of Kerry you are in you might be able to get a better answer.

The UHF aerial should improve the quality of TV3 and TG4 significantly if at the moment you just have a VHF aerial.

I'm afraid that if you want to get more channels then you will either have to talk to Sky (preferrable) or Chorus.

If you can't receive one of these, Sky is best. Cost about €29 per month to get all four Irish TV in almost DVD quality, plus a gazzilion other channels.

BBC (22 channels approx of TV & Radio) is free on Satellite, either via Sky box (which you own and keep even if you later cancel Sky) or a €200 approx FTA only Satellite system with NO monthly or ongoing charges, 60+ Radio, and about 20 usefull Free TV channels inc the BBC1.. BBC4, News24, CBBC, CBeebies, CNN, Sky News, Performance, Reality TV, Classic FM TV, Travel, etc,

A dish need not be more than a few feet off ground if a clearish view to south east upward to where sun is in sky about 11am this time of year (lower than sun in Summer, higher than sun in winter). The Dish can be up to 100m from your TV.

A wideband aerial usually is not very sensitive (the two are generally mutually exclusive).

    €20 is not cheap.
