Glastonbury + (oxegen ranting)

i noticed an earlier thread on this topic but there was only two replies.

surely this being the music forum we can get a bit of discussion on one of the biggest festivals of the summer.

how does everyone plan on getting tickets as you cant use credit cards. you can use a debit card or postal order if you ring i think.

had a look at the thread on oxegen. freaky freak, we dont need you to give us the background to one of the biggest music icons of the century.

also to all those who a want a blanket ban on mainstream music, you need to be taught how to form an independant thought.
clearly mainstream music has been hijacked by the multinational capitalist corporations. but thats not to say that nothing good can ever come out of mainstream acts.
the beatles were mainstream, ok if they belonged to this era they wouldnt be making the same music they were back in the 60's and 70s'. but they would still have that pop sensibility and penchant for writing catchy tunes that would surely lead to mainstream success. would they be producing corporate driven bland ****e, i dont think so.
did it happen to occur to any of you that the promoters might have decided not to take such a narrow view of the industry and actually seek out mainstream acts with proven talent. take two acts mentioned in the oxegen thread- sugarbabes and pink. both have proven their ability to create their own sound with inovative if not groundbreaking music. both are self-styled and write their own music, the sugarbabes even went as far as to introduce gary numan to a new audience and give him some credibility (something he never had in the 80's).
i could go on but i dont have the time. one final point, i think the most ironic aspect of this whole issue is that the same people are blissfully unaware that the bands they support so fervently are also mainstream, they are just packaged differently, all the same I think we can agree on one point, alot of them are rather good.

    nicely said sir!

can't believe im gonna see Bowie for starters, the rest is icing. been at witnness/oxegen/whatever since it started and every year it has been a beautiful experience. as you said, mainstream or not it will be rather good!

saw Flaming Lips, Har Mar Superstar, Streets, Ladytron, Roots all class acts with a slightly more underground following and the highlight for me was....Coldplay!

almost afraid to admit it but the gig was just fantastic. the crowd were into it and the show was magic. hated them up til last year and had presumed they were just another sh1te 30-something act to listen to during Friends ad-breaks.

    how wrong i was.

    bring it! :)

    rodney and Karl -
much truth in what you say -
if there's anything worse than someone liking mainstream music, it's people who are too pretentious to admit that some mainstream music is excellent in its own field -
let's face it - we all have songs that we secretly like and we know we shouldn't:
I confess that I liked a-ha, Dead or Alive and Ultravox in the 80s - hardly as cool as saying you liked Rory Gallagher and Thin Lizzy -but hey, just being honest.
I'm also going to dig my musical grave by admitting that some of Kylie's singles are perfect pop - and that Marilyn Manson kicks as much big-time ass as the best grunge bands when he really wants to.

as for Coldplay - whoever said they weren't a great band - their last album is simply wonderful. Not quite the difficult, ground-breaking equal of radiohead's 'Hail to the Thief' - but I know which one I'd probably prefer to listen to while doing the ironing. Some music is for ironing - others for commuting - and others. like alphastates, for going to see a local band and thinking, in this post Brian McFadden era - that yes, there is a God, and there is some excellent emerging talent in this country who can play music without a backing track!

I dont like some bands so i give a negative opinion on them, I never said nothing good can come from mainstream music, just that i dont like it, its not my taste, in fact i even like kylies lastest single, i just would never go see her at concert and as a whole i dont like the certain pop/mainstream scene and enjoy slagging or putting it down or whatever.

I'm also well aware that some of the bands i do like are mainstream but packaged different, its just they actually use there own talents as in playing instruments and writing there own lyrics. Not saying mainstream artists have no talent, they do in singing or whatever they do, i just like to see an artist as a package who do all there own stuff, there is exceptions of course as in everything.

I have a specific taste in music and a specific hatred of other music but i'm well aware of all the points you've made, i voice my opinions in a narrow minded way sometimes and i'm sorry if that offends you or paints a certain picture of what kind of a person i am.

yeah i have always really enjoyed witnness, although i think fairyhouse was the better venue. had a great time there the year before last. hoping to head again this year, will go to see all the bands i will have missed in glastonbury and who were supposed to be good. cant really say a bad word about coldplay either! they make good music after that everything else is secondary.

wasnt offended just pointing out that like everything else its not black and white, you can have good bands and not so good bands in the mainstream arena. i guess i just like to be consistant with my criticism.

and now im going to follow cherrypickers example and plug a great irish band that is sure to be far more widely known in the near future.
the new album is out April 2nd, if you dont know their music check them out you will thank me for it. www.alphastates.com

Arrangements for overseas buyers of Glastonbury are now in place. Unlike UK residents who must use debit cards overseas buyers can (must) buy online at www.aloud.com with credit cards

Notes of caution though: Tickets are limited to 2 per person. They are personalised (meaning that you must provide the names and addresses of the ticket holders - they cannot be touted or sold on to a third party although I think you can cancel your order and get refunded up to 20th May I think). ID checks will be made. Also for overseas buyers you must pick up the tickets in Shepton Mallet office (closest village to Glastonbury festie).

I recommend you look at the offical site
    http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/tickets/

and also at the www.efestivals.co.uk glastonbury message boards

    Best of luck
