    Hey ppl,

I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about (or has) an iPod - you know, those new mp3 players made by Apple??
What shops sell them anyway?? I might go take a look-see when I get a minute to meself.
    I heard the cost is AROUND €350... - true/false??
I wonder are they heavy at all? I'd hate to get one if it's as big as a walkman/discman, its too head wreckin carrying that weight around :( !

Go to apple.com/store and select Ireland from the drop down box at the bottom of the page.

€350 for a 15gb model, they're about the size of a box of 20 cigarettes (although not as wide!) and weigh about the same as a mobile phone...
I have mine nearly a year now, they're brilliant!

be sure to get the itrip aswell,
radio transmitter that connects to ipod
so you can chuck your ipod the glove box of the car
and listen to it on the radio, without wires!

got mine in the US for $35, which is about €25.
but of course, apple HAVE to sell it here for €50.

You should be check out the Creative Jukebox Zen too. It's the iPod's main rival and while it isn't as sleekly designed or doesn't have the same choice of accessories, it's much, much cheaper and better value for money that the overpriced iPod.

I've heard mostly bad things about the zen. It's BIG, heavier than the ipod and seems to crash quite a bit and i've heard stories of the batteries coming loose inside as well.

iPod is much nicer, having used both...

It's bigger and heavier only in relative terms, it's still smaller and lighter than a walkman for example, and is about the size of 20 pack of cigarettes, while the newer iPods are about the same size of a 10 pack. Going solely on my own experiece with the Zen, I've had no battery or crashing problems.

But I agree, the iPod is a nicer machine and if they were the same price, I'd go for the iPod every time, but at the moment a 20gb iPod is €450.00, while a 30gb Zen Xtra is just €338.80.

I happen to have one of the I-river ihp 120 and can say nothing but good things about it.

It beats every mp3 player out there in terms of features including the ipod and the creative zen.

If you do decide to get one, buy a proper pair of headphone because like all products with standard headphones, they are really bad.

The sound is tinny when being used with them and there is no bass heard at all, so make sure you definitely get proper headphones to use with them.

If you need any more questions answered, feel free to ask me.

www.everything-ipod.co.uk has the itrips greatest invention out there dunno if they'll ship to ireland though cos i think they are aware of them being illegal.

    on to the pod.

had the 20gig one since december and it's great really easy to use and look sooo goood. also the 3rd party software for the ipod is in plentiful supply.

be sure to get ephpod for transfering songs over it's what i use instead of itunes but sometimes use itunes for a quick transfer.

i'm currently using the headphones that came with it.
they are good but i don't like the color cos every1 in the street knows you have an ipod (mine was robbed on me lucky i had pcworld insurance!:D)

any suggestion for earphones would be great

Ehhhh, of course they'll post it to Ireland, it's technically illegal to use them in the UK too, but it's only illegal to use these things not sell them. The EU is due to force reform on the law with regards to shortwave radio over the FM frequency by the end of 2004 anyway. Currently it is still (borderline) illegal to use them without a license in Ireland, the UK and one other EU country (can't remember)

I disagree, iTunes is far superior apart from the fact that it's made by apple, it also offers features for organising your music that Ephpod can not match (or WMP, or even Winamp). Even if you don't have an iPod get iTunes.

    MX500

If its in-ear ones your looking for, these are simply the best ive ever heard. there is a MX400 RC which is the same but with a shorter lead to pop into the Ipods remote, so your not tripping over leads, great idea.

    PX200

If its the overhead style your looking for then the PX200 are great, they are actually quite small, but the sound is amazing (a little bass heavy, which i like), they kinda seal over your ear and people around you can not hear the music, even if its really loud. very handy on buses etc. Also they come with a savage little case that protects them when they are in your bag or pocket.

For cycling i use my MX500, but for trains/buses etc i use the PX200.

Also found an Irish store that sells iTrip:

    http://www.compub.com/product_info.php?products_id=1090

Everything iPod are offering free 12V chargers with their iTrips now...

The wiring where my remote cable joins the connector for the iPod became loose very quickly, the wires are exposed.. :/ The headphone connector seems to be loose too... Apple agreed to send me replacements.

for the first six months of our 'relationship' everything was dandy. but after which time it must be said that it suffers from the following problems (as mentioned above): crashes occasionally, and you'd be amazed how difficult it is to find a pin to stick in that darned reset hole / when merrily scrolling (using the scroll wheel) to select a song, somehow you manage to change the volume... u try again, and somehow u've managed to press the skip some button... again, again, one finger on device... it works! / and when i shake it gently i can hear a little rattling inside.

all that aside, it's rather beautiful.

let's face it, life's about image. and if something can balance image and functionality perfectly - then it's a better product. hello mr.ipod. yes, it's more expensive - but in truth having excessive amounts of portable gigs available isn't all it's cracked up to be. the creative zen is akin to the lovely toyota corrolla... sturdy, and something you'll buy for your decripit old mother one day. me, i need a beamer in shiny white with a delicate scroll wheel.

    Well ppl....

.....I think all my questions have been answered by both your replies, and my spontaneous nature! I went out within the 24 hours of starting this topic and bought an iPod! :D So if anyone else had the same question as I did.... I can add a little info....

.....It cost €430 for the 20GB iPod in Dixons. €75 for insurance in case it gets stolen or accidentily 'falls' (the lady said "there is a rumour of the batteries feckin' up, so if theres a problem - let it 'accidentily fall' - ...."

Of course I'm an idiot and presumed Apple would be thoughtful enough to think of those who are using older versions of Windows (maybe because 'they' DESPISE XP??!). So I took it to my mate's, who has XP, new enough comp. Turned out he didn't have a firewire port for it. Which means I now need a connector to change the firewire to a USB.

Long story short: I like it and I havn't even tried it! But if you go to buy one, make sure you got the requirements for it!!!

    Thanks all :D
