Is there anywhere in the US where a dual-band mobile will work ? I'm heading to NY for a week and would like the use of my phone, but heard that all networks use GSM800 ?

    TIA

US Networks use GSM 1900, most other GSM networks worldwide use GSM900 and GSM1800.

Tri-band mobiles implement all these bands, and you will need one if you want to use your phone in the US

there was a related post about this last week: quad band and tri band?

some US Networks are increasingly using both 850 and 1900, in fact AT&T have withdrawn all handsets that don't offer 850 (i.e. the tri-band 900/1800/1900 handsets we use), there was a good article about this from engadget this week:
AT&T Wireless customers: your phone is about to become obsolete
