hmm.... whats the story with this show and why is it so popular?

It seams to me just to be full of silly formulatic storylines and stupid action sequences, the whole show feels like a B grade version of mc gyver!

or am i missing the point?

You're missing the point :) The show adds an air of gravitas thus allowing it to be "deeper". There's also the fact that it's - somewhat - one story spread across the year, whereas MacGuyver, and other shows that you allude to, were episodic installments. A very different basis for storytelling. And of course there's the real time element.... Having said that, there's a certain amount of undeserved praise heaped on '24'. It should - IMHO - have been one season only and the current season (and I'm up to the US showings) does nothing to change my opinion.

I never saw the previous 2 seasons of 24 but I'm really enjoying the current one.

I didn't watch series 1 or 2, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the latest series. The last episode was terrific.

Angel + 24 = Enjoyable Tuesday night of TV.

I'm watching it on Sky so I have :

Jake 2.0 (wathcable but no great shakes)
    24 (Really enjoying it)
Cold Case (Great Show, getting better)
The Handler (I like this. Dunno why it's being canned)

Is there an 8th series? I thought Stargate Atlantis was taking over from it now?

As I've said - there's an eigth and final series. Atlantis will run alongside it for one year, in the comparable way that The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine both co-existed for one year. Also it should be clear from the finale that there are unresolved issues...

Thought this was a '24' thread, not 'SG-1'

'24' season 1 was one of the best shows that season, but that was 2 years ago.
The format and storylines have seriously slid in quality since then. Season 2 was watchable, but didn't have the same buzz and energy as season 1. So far, season 3 is pretty poor imo.
None of the storylines are particularly interesting, and it doesn't feel like the show has moved on enough in 3 years. Season 1 had originality, but since then it's the same format, with a slightly different story, but not innovative enough. In the gap between season 2+3, spanning 3 years, not much changed except for Kim joining CTU. Tony & Michelle zzzz.
I can just about live with that, but the show's biggest crime is that the suspense & tension is gone.

It doesn't have the same level of danger that the first season had. For example, the closing moments of season 1 were excellent, and confirmed the feeling that none of the characters were truly safe.
By season 3, when Tony got shot, I couldn't take it seriously.
'24' season 3 is safe where it should be full of suspense and danger. I'm not saying the writers should be killing off characters every week (though that would definitely help), but there should be at least tension and a genuine concern for the characters' well-being because the viewer believes the worst could happen.
Compared to season 3 of 'Alias', the difference is all the more apparent. '24' has stagnated where 'Alias' has thrived. Continually shocking developments and excellent characters is what 'Alias' has, and '24' season 1 had. It could/should have been a classic, single-season show, and the law of diminishing returns is very clear when viewing '24'.

I'd also like to say that, I'm sure season 3 of '24' is perfectly watchable for those viewers who've posted earlier saying they haven't watched season 1 or 2, but there's no comparison between the first longest day in Jack Bauer's life and what's on TV now.
Maybe I'm asking too much to expect the same level of excitement, tension, danger & amazement I felt when I watched season 1, but that's just my (disappointed) view of '24'.

Absolutely perfectly stated. I couldn't have put it better myself.

I very much disagree with TCamen!! You make it sound like 24 is a bad show. IMO it is still the best show out there on tv at the moment. Maybe the latest series isn't as amazing and fresh as the first season but it's definitely still great!!

I definetely agree with my good friend TCamen. The show's not remotely fresh. The twists are generally either predictable or contrively forced. The characters develop little - ohh! Jack's being intense! AGAIN! It's air of grittiness seems sort of put on. It's trying too hard to be "tough" without any real emotional resonance. The story also seems to ramble all over the place now, trying to pad itself over a twenty four hour period. Having seen all the US episodes I feel I can very safely say my current summary of the show, if asked to do so in one word, is: meh.

Season 3 of '24' *is* bad, for the very reasons I already stated.
it is still the best show out there on tv at the moment.

What other shows (if any) do you watch? I'm just curious because I can think of lots of things that are either in their 3rd season or later, and have more than maintained their quality, unlike '24'. I certainly disagree that '24' is the best thing on TV. Not even close.

In response to tcamen - You are right about 24 not being the best tv show. I should have really said that it's my current favourite for the type of show it is. I can't exactly compare it to say, a comedy or a documentary, and say it's the best. It's just that i like it and that's all :). Though i can see exactly what ur talking about with the show starting off really well then not getting better each season

The main point i was trying to make earlier is that people talking here are making it sound like it's not worth watching anymore. This baffles me as these people seem to dislike it so much they still bother to get all the latest episodes from the US before they're aired here?

Well I guess I should answer this one :D It's just I find it very frustrating knowing the potential of the show. Given that I was severly spoilt the first season, I didn't want this to happen again - seeing as how the twists are one of the better elements of the show. So I decided to get the latest US episodes. There are other shows that I prefer, but this was one of those that I felt would be made even worse if I had advance knowledge of. Currently better, from the US, IMHO would include: Alias, Angel, Carvinalé, Nip/Tuck, The O.C., Scrubs, The Shield, The Sopranos, The Wire.... But I don't need to get all these because I like to enjoy watching some of them with friends or maybe only recently discovered them.
It's not that '24' is a steaming pile of crap (well some elements of it are) but that I'm just feeling very weary and let down by it, and I'd prefer it were some other way.

I only ever give up on TV shows when they get REALLY bad, '24' isn't there yet :p
I'll keep watching until it's just utter utter hell to watch, but really my point was just that it's fallen so far, and it *COULD* be so much better. Some plot lines are excruciatingly dull & painful this season, but I'm a trooper, maybe the series will improve...

I'd agree with ixoy's list of better things to watch than '24' save for 'Scrubs', which I don't like.

As for shows I've given up on...
    Boston Public *cough*
    The Practice *cough*
pretty much any David E. Kelley show after a few seasons *cough* :D
