Previously I left my PC idle while recording DVD's as I felt it ensured a good burn.
I have a 2x burner but I need to burn alot of discs over the next few days.
Would I compromise the quality if I used Word while I burnt a disc .
    I have 768Mb of Ram.

Personally I use my PC whilst burning a DVD (A06) using Nero.
I wouldn't use any intense processor hogging application but surfing and such works fine for me.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

On my old rig (Athlon xp3000), I could only do light stuff but on current rig (P4c 3.0@3.8) I can do whatever I want. Must be the hypertreading :)

Shouldn't do in any way. Word won't really tax your PC in any way so you should be fine. The only time using your PC will cause a problem is if your CPU usage or Hard Disk accesses prevent Nero's buffer from being reloaded with data fast enough. So long as DMA is enabled on the DVD drive this shouldn't happen and using Word certainly won't be able to cause a problem.

The fact that you only have a 2x DVD Burner will reduce the chance of a problem as you need to refresh the buffer more slowly.
