Firewire link for Camcorder

My sister just got a digital camcorder (sharp vl-z1) which has an i-link ieee1394 port. I thought that she would be able to hook this up to her pc, but the camcorder does not appear as a device or usable in any way when connected to the firewire port. There seem to be no drivers on the sharp website and I have no ide how to get this to work. Does anyone know if this setup should work or does she need a video capture card with firewire interface or ssomething else?
    Thanks

No, you don't need any special capture card... just as long as you have a standard run-of-the-mill firewire interface on your PC.
As for a specific driver for the camera... if you can't find any, it should still run happily as a generic DV camera afaik.

What operating system is the machine running?
Generally what will happen in Windows XP is that once you plug the camera into the PC, you'll get the 'device connected' sound and the camera will show up in windows explorer... then you can use whatever video capture software you want.
Windows Movie Maker is just about the handiest program if you don't have anything else, it'll be in "C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe" if you're running Windows XP.

If there's no signs of life from it at all, then the first place I'd go to is the device manager to check if the IEEE1394 ports are installed correctly, or listed at all.
Have you tried using other firewire devices with success?
Check out the PC/motherboard/interface cards manufacturers website, they may have software updates available to sort this problem, also have a look at windows update... I recall seeing a hotfix related to firewire recently.
It's also possible that if your firewire is integrated to the motherboards, that it may be disabled in the BIOS... so there's yet another thing to check.

Also not to overlook the very basic, make sure the camera is turned on while connected, and read the cameras manual regarding IEEE1394.

Using XP, Firewire on motherboard is enabled and appears in control panel, but nothing happens when camera is connected and turned on...no new devices and no option to use in Windows Movie Maker. I have no other firewire devices, bios is up to date but will give windows update a go. Thanks for the tips.
