It looks as if the success of Judge Judy has led to the demise of Open House?

What now for Mary & Marty?

Never watched the programme but it seems to have caused a fair old controversy with even the patriotic "Irish" sun apparantly getting in on the act to save the programme by printing up a "save open house" petition.

Course it wouldn't be RTE if they didn't kill a popular programme. Glenroe being a case in point - regularly got over 1/2 mill viewers and they chopped it and it's been replaced by ?

    - I used to think Open House was ****e but in fairness its a whole lot better than Judge Judy and most other daytime crap. I work nights so I'd watch it sometimes when I get up. I'm sure crumblies in nursing homes all over the country are going bananas.
I wouldn't be mad on Mary Kennedy but Marty Whelan is ok and comes across fairly honest. The cookery and gardening bits are good as well. Compared to Ireland AM and its numerologists, its positively intellectual television.

This was the sole topic of discussion on Liveline last Thurday. Joe Duffy was stunned by the outcry and likened it to the reaction when RTE axed the Met Eireann people a few years go.

The people who rang up in protest ranged in age from their thirties up, but it was mentioned that the show also had a cult following among students.

They had an RTE rep on near the end who gave the impression that it may be replaced with a similar but 'better' programme. However her comments were very vague and it's hard to say what they will do.

    The "demise" of Open House.....

Surely that implies that it was ever actually good.

So the big exclusive news is that Kerry & Brian McFadden are going to be doing RTE's new afternoon show to get a younger audience apparantly. So two veteran broadcasters make way for a mouthy trollop who can't keep her toungue in her mouth and her gombeen singer husband. Ireland's answer to Richard and Judy. All slots nicely into place for Brian. RTE rig your a star so he wins, secret negotiation for him and mouthy to do afternoon show, leave boyband, announce new afternoon show.

Richard and Judy can be very good, so to compare them to the evil that is the McFadden duo is just despicable:eek:

The answer lies in that Crash Test Dummies song:

"He said that it was from when
The car had smashed so hard
    Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm....."

Not according to Gareth O'Callaghan on 2FM who had it as an "exclusive" yesterday.

Brian and Kerry McFadden to get their own tv show? :(

If I wanted to see three big tits on TV I'd just dust off my copy of Total Recall.

I dont have a problem with Open house and I can't understand why its going to be axed. It appeals to most age groups(OK except real small kids) but there is obviously a huge market for it and it was nice, informal and laid back, which is how TV should be.

Actually sceptre it was called "Afternoon Tea" with Thelma Mansfield in the Mid 80s, it was just her in a continuity setting with a few guests in-between programes. It was a bit like "Dempseys Den" when it was just Ian Dempsey, except for older people.:p ...Then of course that evolved into "Live at 3" in around 1987.

Why did you call her Thelma 'everything goes into the boot of my car after the show' Mansfield???????
