    thinking about gettting new printer.
    looking at the

    EPSON R300 and
    EPSON R200

does anyone know if the only difference is the card-reader?
is performance identical? [they use the same ink cartridges]

A few weeks ago, I was also looking for a printer and narrowed it down to the Epson R300 and the Canon i865. I choose the Canon as it had a faster print speed and one review I read said that the Epson was fine for photo printing but not so great at printing documents so I've gone for the Canon. Haven't used it yet as waiting for last deliveries before I build my pc. Don't know the difference between the two you listed but you should try a few reviews from the sites listed in the sticky at the top of the technology section:

don't need the card reader thingy,
and the epson r200 is only £90!
cartridges are only about £4.50 aswell.

fair bit cheaper than the canon.
    still only researching though.
let you know how i get on.

David, like you I was going to go for the R200. When you take the cost of delivery into account, the cheapest I could get it for was €145 from Vikingdirect.ie with free delivery. However I ended up going for the R300 as I could purchase it for €170 including delivery from pixmania.com. For an extra €25 euro I thought the Card reader, USB connection on the front of the printer and the status display (not to be confused with the preview monitor) were worth the money.

I agree with aaf that the Cannon i865 is the better all rounder but by the time you include delivery I think you're going to pay at least €240 (only €230 if you can collect yourself from Elara).

i have no need for little setup lcd [do it on pc i presume instead]
no need for card readers, as i edit all my photos before i print them.
r200 has usb port on front aswell if i really want to print direct from exif.
    i was looking at
    http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/acatalog/catalogbody.html
and they only have the r200, and they sell the cartridges VERY CHEAP.
[aswell as blank cdrs and dvdrs]
it's the running costs i'm more concerned with, not the upfront.
i also checked on ebay.co.uk and you can pick up a full set of r200/r300 cartridges
    for £20 without bidding!
that's good value compared to the lexmark ones i have now that cost €90 to
replace both black and colour. [plus thery're tiny]

Dave, what are the makes of those compatible cartridges you have been looking at. From what I've read in various forums, Jettec and Print-Rite seem to be the most reliable, especially with Epsons. Others such Inkrite and JR Universal seem to get mixed reviews. However Jettec and Print-Rite for the Epson R series are only coming out around now.

Bankdiscshop.co.uk only put that R200 up the day after they had despatched my DVD writer otherwise I'd bought the R200 off them as well and saved myself the bother of waiting around for two separate deliveries.
