can anyone tell me how to install madrake9.2? I got the three iso images. Now Ive installed ISO Buster1.5. When I double click on the first image, I get 4 selections to make??? (attached Pic)

Whats the next step? I want to make the cdr's bootable

The easiest way to burn the iso`s, is using an app like NERO, and select Burn ISO / CD Image

Once burned the cd ISO will be bootable

    info here : http://www.cse.msu.edu/~cse231/How%20to%20burn%20the%20iso's%20provided%20by%20CSE%20in%20NERO.htm

    and

    http://www.linuxiso.org/viewdoc.php/neroburning.html

i dont think you can burn using ISO Buster, it justlets you look inside an iso image

n1 baz, Nero's doing the trick. Now all I have to do is setup email/internet/ftp/proxy server :dunno:

I'm just trying this OS out TBH. Is there any apps you's could recommend for setting up email server via mandrake

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,985 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

Most of those apps will be available on install, or even after install and install them via the control panel "configure your computer > software"

    Anyway some hints

To get a fuller list of software, go here http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php

Then deslect the cd`s in the software media manager, so you can use the online sources. Its pretty easy.

Anyway you might want to save on bandwidth and just install RPMs from the cds, so ignore the easyurpmi stuff until you cant find something you like.

You can always install webmin and work the servers from there :)

Oh if you`re looking for the kernel sources, here you go : ftp://ftp.rediris.es/sites/carroll.cac.psu.edu/mandrake/9.2/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/kernel-source-2.4.22-10mdk.i586.rpm

Excellent, I don't have to start a new thread and show my ignorance...

Using urpmi, how do I change the media order? When I run urpmi it prompts for the CD, but I want it to go straight to the Esat mirror without having to select the --media manually. It'd be nice to leave the CD media mapping there though.

(I'll be administering this remotely, so I could well have someone's eye out when the CD drive ejects. :))

    "urpmi.removemedia -a" removes ALL sources

then use the sources as defined from here : http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php

That would be the best initial way of doing it, but if you can get access to the machine you can go in using the GUI and deselect the cds as a source, i dont know if there is a command that does this :(

Some good info here : http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/eggnbacon/docs/urpmi-howto/

right lad, I've booted to the cd and started the installation. On partitioning I tell it to 'erase disk'. it goes ahead and formats the drive. I then go ahead and start installing the files, but on 'Install System' I end up getting errors which are very similar to this one:

'There was an error installing packages termcap-11.01-8mkd-1586. Go on anyway?'

I hit ok, but then within a couple of seconds another error pops up, etc etc. Any ideas?

Either you bolloxed the Iso when it burnt or the iso was faulty, try burning at a lower speed, and use good quality CD Media

    okidoke.

*hoping its not a corrupt iso download!*

Thanks for the info bazH. Seems a bit stupid that you can't prioritise/sort the collections from the command line (this box doesn't have a GUI). Silly feckers.

    well im guessing $urpmi.removemedia cd1

would remove that, tbh once you have online sources there is no need for the cds, even if you wanted to install a rpm off the cd, sure you could pop it in and $rpm -Uhv package.name.rpm

install seems to be going ok now. Second attempt at burning was half the speed of original disk

I rebuilt a Mandrake 9.2 machine this morning, updated to kernel 2.6.3 as well. Any problems ando, post here

You could, but I don't think it'll handle dependencies as well as urpmi. And of course if the issue is bad enough that I have to be at the console, there's a fair chance I won't have access to the network anyway.

I'll live with it, I'm just saying that it seems silly not to have a sort/prioritise function. I'll have a look around to see if I can suggest it somewhere.

Sorry but i cant think of a reason that youd need the cds once you have online sources, that is after the initial install

n1 m8. I had to download the cd2 Iso again today as my one was fecked, but I've finally got the Os installed. First impressions are that it reminds me of MacOs classic. Its nice to see built in word/excel programs. I have dhcp setup on my Lan so the internet was up setup pretty much straight away ohmy.gif Dont really like the internet browser but.

I'll look into setting up email server tommorow, plus file server for windows/mac clients. blink.gif

my company are currently using mainly nt4/nt5 servers for email and file sharing, with 2000/Xp machines as workstations. On some sites, we have mac email servers. The main reason why I'm now looking at Linux Mandrake is because I've heard so much about their reliability, so if this home trial works out I'll probably try it on a site for a few weeks unsure.gif

Adam, at that stage Id imagine you would have all the relevant apps installed. Although I`m sure the more info you look for the urpmi command, theres bound to be some method of doing it :)

Ando, the fileserver end of things is relativley easy - using samba

For a better browser, download this : ftp://speakeasy.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake/9.2/contrib/i586/mozilla-firebird-0.6.1-6mdk.i586.rpm

And install it, its only version 0.6(current is 0.8) but will keep you going :)

Version 0.8 has some dependency issues, unless you`re using cooker sources

Yeah, I'll keep at it bazH, and thanks for the help.

Oooh, I didn't know there was a contrib RPM, nice one.

Thats what you get when you use the online sources :)

There is a mandrake rpm of mozilla-firebird 0.8, but it gives dependency errors for libXinerama, proll some googling would sort all that out

    n1 baz,
another question. In the console, how do you copy into a text editor. For example, If I want to copy a ping result

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,985 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

You could just highlight the result, copy it and paste it into kedit or whatever you`re using, you could also

    $ping www.boards.ie > ping.txt

Theres probably much easier commands as well

(Just in case ando isn't aware.)

In most Linux apps, when you highlight something it's automatically copied to the clipboard. And if you have a three-button mouse, you can paste just by hitting the middle button.

ehm, how do you get postfix? Do you have to pay for the app?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,985 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

    If you`re using X windows

KDE > Configuration > Packaging > Add Software

    and search for postfix,

    alternativley

    $urpmi postfix

    :)
