Im thinking of upgrading my 80gb IBM deskstar to a sata based drive. Size should be between 80 to 160bg. Must be sata and 7200rpm but no Raptor drives as there to damm loud :D

What make of HD's do you guys suggest?

The current storage review "daddy" is th Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 and the smaller models should have similar performance.

I tend to recommend Western Digital Special Edition's otherwise due to their excellent performance and three year warranty. They are probably slightly noisier than other similar drives. A lot of manufacturers seem to be offering a 3 year warranty on their 8Mb cache lines now.

If noise is a factor the Seagate Barracuda is probably the quietest (S)ATA option.

I got myself a Seagate 160GB 7200rpm 8MB. I havent run it on any load yet. I've only ran it to test the mobo, but it was really quite. Couldnt hear a thing. HAd to touch the hdd just to make sure it was running :)

The Hitachi in that review is 250GB so not in the range considered

I made this decision about 3 months ago looking for a SATA 160GB drive and at the time it was between the Seagate Barracuda and the Samsung Spinpoint. Read loads of reviews and Samsung won almost all of them.

I never had any Samsung hard drives before but a rake of Western Digital SE 8MB Cache ATA drives over the last few years that performed very well, so was a bit unwilling to consider Samsung.

However the reviews were pretty overwhelming so I bought 2 of the Samsungs 160GB 8MB Cache in RAID0 and very happy. Excellent performance, very quiet :)

I have two of the same drive as neokenzo.
Great hard drives, I'd highly recommend them. Can't tell at all if they're spinning or not!
