erm, where are you plugging the headphones/speakers in???
if its a round, green phono socket at the back of the pc, you already have a soundcard...
make sure that you're putting the headphone jack into the green socket. the other 2 are inputs...

try adjusting the volume in "start/programs/accessories/entertainment/volume control" make sure that 'wave' and 'cd player' arent muted...

If you do have a sound card and you're still getting no luck then you might need to install/reinstall drivers for it.

Ok. im going to start from the beginning here.
If you have bought the PC within the last 5 years it should have a sound card in it already. Even this computer here in DCU has a sound card.

In order to hear sound you must have your speakers/headphones plugged into the sound card and some music playing. Put in a audo CD and start playing music so that when you plug in the headphones/speakers you will hear something. Press Play. Usually you will find the socket to plug them into at the back of the PC. Go around to the back and locate what are a row of small 3.5" sockets that your headphone socket will fit into.

Now, the output for the speakers/headphone is usually green in colour. If you see a green one plug them into that one. If you dont you will need to try each one of them.

If you still dont hear anything ensure that you have a little speaker icon in the windows system try.See below for image:

If the icon has a red line through it then the sound is muted. Double click on the icon and it will open the following window [see below]. Unclick Mute All and nicrease the volume, you should hear something now.

If this does not appear or you still cannot hear any sound then your sound card may not be installed at all. Im not going to type up how to do that now ... im quite hungry.
