Sky software update

There is a new Sky SW update arriving.

(It happens automatically in batchs via satellite).

It informs you to connect phone line. Ignore this if you don't currently use the phone services.

Extra yellow button for "messages" (you need money and phone to sign up and send, so I woulnd't bother)

But here is a confusing to some bit:

Services | Setup | Picture settings.

You now have a Main and "2nd Location" menu setting for
    16:9 (includes "smart 16:9 mode" 4:3 TVs)
    4:3 Letter box
    4:3 Crop

BUT the RF1, RF2, and SCART composite and SCART RGB are the same Digital to Analog convertor. Even Sky+ has only one!

    So what does it do?

Well hot foot from the Batcave at Watty's I can reveal all.

The "main" is picture mode if the remote IR signals are received on digibox front panel, and the Alternate or 2nd location, is picture mode used if an IR remote signal is received via RF2.

ALL the outputs always have the identical mode.

I placed the "remote eye" on RF2 beside TV and up close press ANY KEY on the remote (firing at the digibox) and the picture on SCART is shape defined in 1st option. Move remote to side and press any button (firing at the remote eye) and the picture shape/mode is as per the 2nd setting.

Nice idea. Though I imagine many folks will be confused as to why main TV picture goes "wrong" when they use "remote eye" via RF2 in another room!

Digital Spy explains it so much more confusingly.

Functionallity of the < > ^ v keys while watching a channel seem somewhat different too.

The connect phone line thing is more "in your face marketing"

Oh, that 2nd Location option will be most handy, as the 2nd TV I use is a 4:3 set and I hate having to change from 16:9 mode whenever I watch Sky from teh 2nd set. This will save hassle! :)

I personally haven't received it yet on my Panny.

Thanks for the explanation - I couldn't make head nor tail of the DS explanation.
