"we don't like you anyway"

this was said to me by a supervisor in work last night after we finished up stocktaking. it was late and i was tired so i didn't realise one of them was actually asking me a question, and i walked right past them, hence the comment.

tbh it doesn't really bother me that he doesn't like me, he's a bit of a prick anyway, but the point is a few of the other supervisors were around (bearing in mind they're all around his age, maybe 20ish, only a bit older than me) and none of them said anything.

this leaves me in the nasty position of being supervised by a bunch of people who probably dont like me, and this is really uncomfortable for me. im not sure what to do, i can hardly complain about something as small as that, but i also feel like its really unfair of him to say stuff like that.

am i being silly over nothing?

Was he actually being serious? Cos I say that all the time when people ignore me :)

    I would say so.

Unless you have reason from before to beleive that he doesn't like you, he was probably being sarcastic. Much the same as when you say something to someone who then walks straight past you without hearing you, you may remark "Well fuck you too."

Once people are older than 12, you'll find it very rare that someone will tell you straight out that they don't like you, particularly in a work environment. I would take sarcastic comments such as the above, as an indicator that in fact he's happy enough to say that kind of thing because he doesn't hate you at all. If you can understand that logic.

Maybe I'm naive. Or too likeable. Or both ;)

Did it sound like he was being serious? How is he with you generally, and since this happened?

If he was serious I wouldn't like that tbh. Something like that would be really unprofessional and would make me feel uncomfortable. But I've never known people in a work environment to say things like that, they'd be too afraid of getting in trouble even if they didn't like you.

well i was worried i might cause a fuss over it if i said something and he claimed he was joking. but tbh he didn't sound like it. he said it in a nasty enough tone, and no one exactly laughed like it was a joke.
he and the other supervisors are generally pretty cold towards me anyway. they laugh and joke with everyone else but im quiet enough and dont exactly get on with anyone very well.
i suppose im making a fuss over nothing. but its still making me feel crappy about going into work later.

    probably
I tend to carry on through life with the idea everyone likes me
if they don't, I couldn't give a toss, tis their loss and they have no idea what wonderfulness they've just missed out on
try it, it's very freeing :D

    yup.

Why care about them ? You're there to do a job as are they. Thats about it. Do your job and forget about it.

Its not a popularity contest unless you are looking for career progression.

Yes its just a job but its a job she has to spend a certain amout of time in, so be isolated like that isnt something that you can ignore easily. If you dont care what they think of you (which you really shouldnt) its never nice to have no friends or even to waste some time with in work.

However, going by what I do, I would take this as a joke. If someone I knew walked by me when I asked a question I'd probably remark something similar.
About the others, maybe they didnt hear, maybe they didnt think it was funny, maybe he always says it, maybe they dont like you.
But thats very unlikely, especially considering its a work environment, I say forget about it unless you get some other indicator.

I feel for you seraphina. In a job i can become inverted and find it very hard to speak with the people who are above me. I know beyond any shadow of a doubt that this is all in my head but it does not stop me from feeling bad when i think i am being criticised.
\\ Not advice sorry. just empathising with you

Wimmen have a tendancy to agonise over whether or not their boyfriend's-sisters-friend's-best_mates-second-cousin from Zwaziland hates them, because at that party ten weeks ago, he/she seemed 'distant'.

I recommend you have a heart-to-heart with your Supervisor.... maybe over some ice-cream... and a nice copy of Bridget Jones' diary.

Not that I was trying to imply you're being a bit sensitive here or anything chuck.

On the other hand... maybe he does hate you... in which case you should make up some outlandish sexual-harrassment case against him and threaten to have his career ruined if he doesn't let you come and collect money incrementally from him in work and otherwise never show up.

I believe this is called blackmail in the trade.

    In fact.

Scrap the whole heart to heart idea, outright.

Invite him to the boards beers and we will all abuse him and tell him how we dont like him.

I wouldn't worry about it if i was you..

Because they could easily make your life very unpleasant. I wouldn't like to be depending on someone who doesn't like me to be professional in their attitude towards me. And if it means you have noone to talk to while you're at work then that makes things even worse again.

Back to the original poster, it sounds like a joke, you're probably reading too much into it. Although I wasn't there to hear the tone of his voice so I can't give you a certain answer.

I've always wanted to see Arnie stick a fork in a bad guy's eye and say "Fork you!"

Imagine it in an Austrian accent. It's funnier that way.

I've seen you give this advice twice now. Is it a film quote or something, or are you just evil?
    Good advice though.

They most likely do hate you. Try and get a new job, your going to feel rotten going into work from now on.

It was probably just a smart remark from a cocky pr ick. The other supervisors prob gave out 2 him after cos they didnt want to do it in front of u as that would have embarrassed everyone including u!

Chances are he doesnt have a great time for you but thats not to say the others feel the same.

I'm in a similar situation in my job. All the people I work with are a bit older than me, early 20's. I don't really get on with them, and they wouldn't talk to me like they do to each other. I don't really care though, I just keep my head down and do my job. I don't think they hate me, but even if they did I wouldn't care.

The way I see it, the job I'm doing atm isn't my chosen profession, and as far as I know, neither is yours. So I'm not going to be here forever.
If it gets worse or happens again I'd complain to someone, but then again complaining might make them hate you more than you think they do:dunno:

    Don't over react. :)
